VHS : Don Quixote (2000)
The movie is reasonably made and it somewhat sticks to the original story. However, the casting of Vanessa Williams as Dulcinea is wrong. Dulcinea was a Spaniard from La Mancha in the city of El Toboso. 99.9% of Spaniards are white, mostly with dark hair but light to olive skin and fine facial features. Vanessa Williams is a mulata (a mix of white and african black). The Cervantes story originates in the 15th century (around the time of Christopher Columbus' Discovery). The mulatos did not come into being until the 17th century and much more in the 19th century and later. This was when the Black African slaves mixed with the European (French, British, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese) whites. Therefore, this is like picking Tom Hanks to play Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his biographical ... Read More

This movie has gotten some unnecessarily bad press. It's basically a Cinderella story with wine. The performances are excellent and the Louis Jourdan subplot is clever. This is a straightforward romantic comedy with some international adventure elements. The script is by the great William Goldman. I've seen it again and again. It's sweet and endearing and the wine information is accurate. Check it out. You have nothing to lose and you probably have a wine-loving friend or two who will find it fun.

This is a fantastic true story about a boy, his mother and his family who are caught up in a communist revolution. If anyone is in doubt about what a choke hold communism can put on a country, see this movie. After you see the movie you might even come to the conclusion that US Senator Joe McCarthy(American patriot, anti spy - anti communist Senator who was railroaded by congressional liberals and the press to the point that his name was made into an adjective in American dictionaries. They made an outcast of him and forced him to live the rest of his short life in disgrace. In 1995, upon the declassification of the CIA's "Verona project", this great man was proven right about everything he claimed including the people that he accused of being communist spies.) wasn't such a bad guy. This movie shows what the reality ... Read More

Two thirds of Ireland's popoulation doesn't live in the towns most Americans have heard of like Galway, Cork, Dublin. This film hit life in small market towns (down the country) square on the head. The scene where the lads are off in the delivery van to the disco the next town over is dead on, all piled into the back and bouncing around on wee roads for miles. The macho posing and abuses hurled back and forth eventually leading to a row sadly couldn't have reminded me more of my numerous nights out with friends in the Midlands. This is the Ireland they don't want you to see in the travel brochures..complete with post dole day, chip shop trash. And the amount of times I've overheard people there speak the words, "Say nothing 'til ya hear more..." says quite a few have viewed the film as well. My suggestion is to try ... Read More

As a former NYC paramedic I've got to say this movie, based on the antics of a 1970s ambulance agency, still holds up in the modern era. The cars and clothes styles may have changed a bit, but peoples are still peoples...
