VHS : King Arthur:Young Warlord
This seems to be a film made out of several episodes of the British 70's TV show -- which was essential viewing for me and my brother growing up. The basic elements are still there and I was left wanting to see more. Now my son can enjoy this perhaps more realistic look at who Arthur might have been.

+: The original cast (Oliver Tobias as Arthur and Brian Blessed as Mark of Cornwall, Lud & Kai -- excellent.)
+: More believable than Disney will ever produce
+: Clever take on the sword-in-the-stone story (a small subplot in the film).
+: Believable battle scenes (e.g. people running away when the bodies start piling up) without undue gore.
-: sound track has aged and was not cleaned up (the technology exists -- they did not use it!).
-: visual quality ... Read More

Let no one say that this Harold Robbins show biz potboiler doesn't begin with a bang: On the very day that Valley High student Pia Zadora wins an award as "most promising English major," she parties with fast Beverly Hills High students, one of whom --- weed-smoking Ray Liotta --- fondles her award and proclains its resemblance to a member of the male anatomy, fondles her breast ("Valley girls are anxious to please!"), throws her onto the lawn ("I'm gonna give you something special!"), and rapes her with the nearby garden hose. All this in the film's first fifteen minutes! (You may think it can't possibly continue at this crazed, trashy pace --- but you are wrong: In the seventy-six minutes left, there are eight nude love scenes, two lesbian encounters, two showers, one hot tub, one Jacuzzi, ... VHS : Taste the Blood of Dracula
This is the fourth instalment in Hammer productions' Dracula series. The storyline is quite unique in that it centers on a group of middle-aged businessmen who inadvertently cause the Count to be resurrected via an occult ritual conducted by a young nobleman, Courtley. They kill Courtley during the ritual, and leave in a hurry, not realising that by committing murder, they have not only caused Dracula to rise again, but awakened his anger. Dracula is bent on revenge for his acolyte's death and proceeds to kill the trio off by manipulating their children.

The acting in this movie was actually pretty good. Christopher Lee reprises his role as the evil Count and actually has quite a few lines of dialogue here, all delivered in his usual deadpan style. His blood- red eyes and demented expressions ... Read More

Bob Shayne (the writer) panned his own movie, which should give you an idea of just how terrible the (very badly edited) version is. By his own account, the script was changed in several critical places which messed up the plot and an actor with a key supporting role literally walked out in the middle of the production. And _then_ some geniuses decided to cut over a third of the movie out for home-video release. Result; a Wood-style (as in Ed Wood, Jr.) slumgullion. On the other hand, the movie has just been released to DVD in its full-length version along with its companion piece ("Incident at Victoria Falls"); I bought it last weekend and, while still not terrific, the movie/miniseries is now at least coherent.

I like Morgan Fairchild and think she did OK as Irene Adler (she looks terrific in Edwardian costume), ... Read More

VHS : Hands of the Ripper
Hands of the Ripper is a shockingly neglected and obscure little atmospheric masterpiece from Hammer Studios. It's a veritable showcase of classic horror at its best, with several somewhat bloody scenes thrown in for good measure. Beautifully shot and scored, the film simply oozes the aura of Victorian London, and the cinematography of the final shot is, ahem, to die for. The entire cast is wonderful, particularly Eric Porter and Angharad Rees, the latter being a delightful young actress I had never encountered before.

I know you're probably wondering if the film is about Jack the Ripper. Well, yes and no. The story is ostensibly about his daughter. You can imagine how screwed up in the head a daughter of Saucy Jack might be; now imagine that this little girl saw her father murder her mother right in front of her eyes. Freud would have ...
