Bad direction keeps this movie from being good. In fact, even Barbara Stanwyck comes off looking awkward in some scenes. But she can never be truly bad. Her presence and a great supporting cast keep me watching this one again and again: (the usually weird) Sydney Greenstreet, (the often overly cute) S. Z. Sakall, and (the always wonderful) Una O'Connor. And the one-reel extra, A Star in the East, is pure Christmas schmaltz that will have any true holiday believers bawling on cue. And that alone is worth the price of purchase.

I have seen most (if not all) of his movies. Errol has always been at the top of my list for free spirited actors. He was a rogue. His alcoholism did not help his acting any, but he managed to (in his younger years) be a fine actor with character and heart for the roll he was playing. The movie had a good plot but not enough (at least for me) interaction between him and Barbara. Because I am a very outspoken person, Barbara could have done a better job of standing her ground and confronting him, instead of sneaking around.

Ida Lupino Lupino as a peripatetic soul makes this an interesting if not disturbing film. A rather caddish Errol Flynn marries Lupino as he struggles with his composing all in an effort to win over Eleanor Parker the fiancée of his brother (Gig Young). The acting is good at times but the plot defies credibility yet it does entertain. This film contains another outstanding score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold.
