fascinating french movie. not overly sentimental and romantic, but at times erotic and lustful. a quiet, slow burning desire. when life was fulfilled and so satisfying, you might just want to end it right there. a movie clicked a core of your soul and would keep vibrating for the rest of your life.
glamorously beautiful hairdresser, a serene, warm, ravishing and passionate woman played so just-right by an excellent actress. the husband role was a bit too old but also a mature, likable and even lovable character played by a fantastic talent actor.
highly recommended.

H.M. Pyles's review "Off With Their Heads" is probably a more cogent plot synopsis than I would make time to write here, so I will forego the synopsis and refer the reader to his review for that. But I wanted to add a few comments about this film, which is a true favorite of mine... While not averse to foreign language films, I don't watch too many of them, probably for the reasons most movie-goers in America forego them: I want to watch rather than read when an actor is performing, and I know I'm losing some contextual nuances when I watch a film in a language where I am not totally fluent. But this is a wickedly entertaining film IN ADDITION to being a real morality play. The stunningly gorgeous and stunningly talented Fanny Ardant really shines in this film, and to my delight, gets lots ... Read More

in my opinion, this is one of the best films ever made. It's impossible to get on DVD unless you're willing to pay around $2 thousand dollars, even in Paris (since I looked). So I was happy to settle for the VHS. The quality of the VHS is excellent and the vendor did a great job on their part. Would highly recommend both film and vendor.

An attractive woman walks into an office she believes to be that of a psychiatrist and proceeds to reveal her innermost secrets to a baffled tax lawyer. Cue conflict, misunderstandings and wary mutual attraction. That's it really, but charmingly done with good performances and just a hint of underlying menace. Those who are afraid to `make the first move' or have ever regretted not doing so may find themselves squirming in identification with the male character. Enjoyable.

There were a few things about the movie as a whole which I did not like,, but on the whole this is a fine movie and it's another superb performance from Juliette Binoche.

Two men meet themselves accidentally in a little town. One of them keeps a secret, while the other is extremely friendly.

A weird friendship will arouse among them - with Schubert's First Impromptu OP. 142 as musical curtain - in which both will be aware about their unfinished projects of life from two well different perspectives. One is a thief who plans to steal a bank, while the other is a retired poetry professor.

An emblematic resemblance of two well opposite sides of he coin united by the unhappiness and existential solitude.

A film that literally captivated and engaged the members of the Jury in Venice 2002 as Bes Film and Best Actor.

The performance given by Jean Rochefort is simply out of this world.

I recently found a copy of Georges Simenon's 1933 "The Engagement" on the remainder table at a local bookstore. Simenon was an extraordinarily successful writer and this work is one of his very best. The novel is a psychological thriller with outward description giving the reader's imagination just enough to build an apprehension of what seems tragically inescapable. The movie follows the novel closely, not only in characterization and plot but in the setting as well. Life the novelist, we become aware of and sympathic to the emotional and spiritual pain underlying the Monsieur Hire's life. Visual clues draw the viewer into being a knowing partner in the story, a story that could be yours or mine given the randomness of events that set our apprehension in motion. As with the novel, the movie has comparatively little dialogue leaving the flow of visual ... Read More

VHS : Lumiere & Company (Sub)
Nearly one hundred years after the creation of the world's first portable motion picture camera, director Sarah Moon ambitiously compiles the work of forty international directors who agree to make a fifty two second film using the original Lumière brother's cinématographe. The project was an intriguing and appropriate way to commemorate the 100 year anniversary since the birth of cinema. Many directors paid their respects to the brother's ingenuity while, in a different approach, others explored the possibilities of the camera. Still, a small number merely participated with passivity. Much can be learned about the evolution of cinema through Sarah Moon's documentary, Lumière and Company.
Embracing the contributions the Lumière brother's made to cinema and technology, many directors choose to make a film in their honor. Patrice LeConte expressed ... Read More
