VHS : Laura (1944)
Here's the list of my film noir favorites ordered from "fantastic" to "merely great." Note that I consider "Laura" to be the best film noir I've ever seen:

3. Double Indemnity
4. Sudden Fear
5. Scarlet Street
6. Out of the Past
7. Pickup on South Street
8. The Asphalt Jungle

2.Forever Amber starring: Linda Darnell, Cornel Wilde, Richard Greene, George Sanders, Glenn Langan

I really enjoyed the film, though having not read the book feel unqualified to make comments about the screenplay. But as a professional musician I feel that I must comment on the music by Raksin which is the finest example of original romantic film scoring I have ever heard, helped by some sublime string playing. The violin and cello solos are heartbreakingly beautiful. Surely it's worth seeing the film for the music alone.

3.Exodus (1960) starring: Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint, Ralph Richardson, Peter Lawford, Lee J. Cobb
directed by: Otto Preminger

Movie is long but it sure does give you a view of how poorly people were treated. It was great to see how their belief kept them strong

VHS : Anatomy of a Murder
I've been watching the entire Otto Preminger catalog lately, and I got around to seeing what is arguably his most famous film. Seeing it again makes me realise that it's a masterpiece of tension, performances, dialogue, and cinematography.

There is so much to like about this film. Nothing here in the trial or the characterisations is present in black and white (there's even a dialogue by Stewart to a potential witness about how people aren't black and white). It is full blown ambiguity, resulting in a far more grown up and mature film than most current courtroom dramas are. It is also refreshingly un-PC, unlike modern courtroom dramas. I like to constrast this film with overblown, incredibly melodramatic shows like The Practice, which I used to watch simply because it was unintentionally hilarious, ... Read More

VHS : In Harm's Way
A classic match up of John Wayne, Kirk Douglas with a five star supporting cast. This, and the action a suspence of the early days of World War Two, make it unforgetable.

6.Advise and Consent starring: Franchot Tone, Lew Ayres, Henry Fonda, Walter Pidgeon, Charles Laughton
directed by: Otto Preminger

VHS : Advise and Consent
Imagine a film where dialogue was so taut and so well spoken that it became the central conveyor of the plot. That sort of film lives mostly in yesteryear, and it lives magnificently in "Advise and Consent", a riveting examination of the ongoing struggle between the basest instincts and noblest ideals of our elected officials.

The plot line is keyed to the nomination for high public office of a former University of Chicago professor accused of consorting with radicals. (Coming off the 2008 U.S. presidential election, does this sound familiar?) The nomination sets off the usual legislative maneuvering and partisan gamesmanship, convincingly brought to life by great ensemble acting and peppered with wonderful performances by Charles Laughton, Walter Pidgeon, George Grizzard and Burgess Meredith. (The establishing shot of Laughton ... Read More

VHS : Court Martial of Billy Mitchell
An entertaining and well-made film with good acting especially Rod Steiger's performance. The ARTISAN DVD is below average; the 2.35:1 CinemaScope is not enhanced for 16:9 TVs, the color is just OK, the picture is not quite sharp, and there is some background noise.

9.Bonjour Tristesse starring: Jean Seberg, David Niven, Deborah Kerr, Mylène Demongeot, Geoffrey Horne

VHS : Bonjour Tristesse
Juliette Greco is perfection as the aging nightclub singer at a chic Paris boite, who sings to strangers night after night of a "street with no address." Irretrievably ravaged by time and perfidious love, Greco gives the part nearly everything she has; in her excellent Givenchy gown she bespeaks chic even as she allows emotion to tremble through her quack of a voice. As she sings the haunting title track, Jean Seberg is twirling around on the dancefloor simultaneously drinking Greco in and obsessing about her own memories of a colorful, blue-splashed summer on the French Riviera, the summer in which the mystic numbers "7" and "e" combined to form a summer of death and disaster.

Preminger is superbly understated here, his direction of Seberg assured and yet improvisatory. Some have criticized the way that Seberg, Niven, and Kerr never even try to sound ... Read More
