VHS : Duel in the Sun
This has always been one of my favorites westerns, although I never went to the trouble of getting a DVD version, until it came up on my Amazon recommendation list. I ordered it right away, and received the usual good Amazon service, and quick, free shipping, and have not been disappointed. Gregory Peck is one of best actors, and makes the movie, playing the bad guy this time, instead of his usual hero role. I can personally recommend this movie, going against a number of the negative reviews that are posted here.

VHS : Stanley & Livingstone
Lost in the flood of great films in Hollywood's greatest year (1939), Stanley and Livingstone pays more attention to historical fact than most so-called history films of that era.

Of especial interest is the footage shot in Kenya by among others, the famous Osa Johnson. The African landscape and peoples shot by this second unit crew raise S&L far above the usual Tarzanesque studio back lot scenes that supposedly depict Africa (always jungle in those days, never veldt or mountains). Supervised by one Captain A. J. Klein, the actions shots involving actual Kenyans easily surpasses the competent and workmanlike Hollywood work of director Henry King.

The attack by outraged locals (lots of Samburu and Maasai hired for the occasion, I would guess) on Stanley's expedition, who ... Read More

This seriel was first produced in 1935. The "special" effects are just terrible but wonderful. I'm amazed at how we accepted such simple story lines. There really was a "suspension" of belief required in those days.
The story is about a civilization that is 20,000 feet underground, has lots of superior technology, but still rides horses. Just great. Gene gets in and out of trouble each week, with a bunch of kids helping to save the day. It a fun thing to watch, you can do it over several days or weeks, and I recommend it.... especially if your over 50 years of age or have never seen Star Wars. ;-)

In an early Gary Cooper "talkie" from 1931,the Coop is quite a cad in "The Fighting Caravans". In order to avoid jail time for a misdemeanor in town, he pretends to be married to a French belle, and hooks up with a wagon train headed West. Sparks fly between the two, but he's a tough scout and not one to be shackled to no woman! Slowly he begins to warm to her, but first must save the Wagons from an Indian attack. It's really nice and quite a treat to watch the wonderful facial expresiions of many of the actors who came from the silent era.

This film is also included in the Great American Western V.16, The with 3 other great films that have the tough guys and women theme. Included on that volume is "The Woman Of Town" (1944) with Claire Trevor ,a fabulous recently made documentary "Old West Cowboys", and , "The Proud and ... Read More

VHS : Zane Grey's Fighting Caravans

It would be unfair of me to be too critical of this 1931 movie which appeared early into the 'talkie' era of movies. And based on a Zane Grey novel of the late 1920s the fictional background is somewhat sound. That said, however, the major point of the scout becoming outdated by the railroad just is not true. The railroads were not connected until four years after the Civil War in 1869 at Provo, Utah, but the era of the frontier scout continued up to and a little past 1890 at Wounded Knee in the Dakotas.

I have the latest 2 disc copy of The Big Trail so I am not unaware of that movie, but I see little resemblance between these two films, though the directors could not have been unaware of either Zane Grey's book or each other's movies.

For me the scenes of this movie are not tied together well and ... Read More
