VHS : Bundle of Joy
I had never even heard of this movie until I saw it on TCM about a year ago. It is a cute story about a young salesgirl Polly (Debbie Reynolds) who ends up getting fired from her job. On the way back to her house she sees a young baby on the orphanage steps and saves it from a terrible fall. When she takes the baby into the orphanage they think it is her baby that she is giving them. The employees think that because she was fired she can't provide for "her" baby so they convince her boss to give her the job back. She ends up realizing later in the movie how much she loves the baby and wants to keep it. She meets the man of her dreams (ironically her real husband, Eddie Fisher) and adopts the baby.

When are they going to put this movie on DVD?

VHS : The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938)
Everyone knows Mark Twain's story of Tom Sawyer. Just the mention of the name conjures up images of whitewashed fences, Indians, and treasure. Tommy Kelly plays Tom in this David O. Selznik Technicolor classic. A mischievious boy at heart, he causes commotion in the town when he runs away to play pirates, and returns to find that he has been assumed dead. When he reveals himself, he does not stay out of trouble for very long. He and Huckleberry Finn (Jackie Moran) become involved in a murder trial. After that, Tom and girlfriend Becky Thatcher (Ann Gillis) find themselves lost in the caves nearby.

The child stars are surprisingly unimpressive. Their antics seem natural enough, but Kelly nor Gillis have enough charm or spunk to cement themselves in the memory. The film is also uneven; the ... Read More

VHS : Young Tom Edison
Tom Edison is one of the scientific geniuses that has most effected daily life in the modern world. However, as a child, his eccentric behavior and overactive mind got him into trouble. This film depicts Tom's (Mickey Rooney) early life, his fascination with Morse Code, his interest in combining chemicals, his thirst for knowledge, and his close relationships with his sister (Virginia Weidler) and his mother (Fay Bainter).

The film is shorter than most, but it covers many different stories and is highly entertaining. Ironically, in the part of a highly active and sometimes twitchy man, Rooney is much more subdued. It is an interesting portrayal, but do not expect to see the guy from all those musicals. Weidler is sweet and fun in her part, especially when she gets to pick on the town bully (Bobby Jordan). ... What a match! Grayson, the beautiful physiognomy, clothes-model, and concert-quality singer was the best of her time (see her in "Kiss Me Kate"); and Mario has a magnificent voice. It was unfortunate that Mario was too out-of-condition to play "The Student Prince". Instead, the role went to Edmund Purdom. Also, Mario was made for the musical Carousel! None sings "If I Loved You" so well.
But, we are happy to have the video tapes and recordings of these
perfect performances available in the market place.

For Hollywood a fairly decent biopic at least better than Night and Day treatment of Cole Porter. It has the great Rodgers and Hart tunes - at least some of them and if they couldn't deal with Laurenz Hart I'm not sure they'd be ready even today. The acting was good the songs terrific, I'd reccomend for any lover of Richard Rodgers musicals.

This classic had me rolling in laughter. I am a retired coastie and it brought back some wonderful memories. I could never have a cinnamon roll again without thinking of this movie and two great actors. Walter Mathau as a veteran cook with a drinking problem and Andy Griffin as his understudy and protector is superb casting. The movie gives a small sample of the Coast Guard's entry and roll at sea, at the start of WWII. I can't wait to acquire a new copy on tape. The first time I viewed this was on a Cutter at sea in the Atlantic. The whole crew loved it!

VHS : Mad About Music
Mad About Music is one of Deanna Durbin's best films.
Durbin plays the daughter of a middle aged movie star, and to protect her mother's youthful image, she's sent to a girl's school in Switzerland. Here she writes herself phony letters from her imaginary father, a heroic explorer and game hunter. When a stranger (Herbert Marshall) comes to town she pretends he's her dad, to satsify her doubtful shoolmates. It's a typical comedy plot that gets a bit moving near the end, but Durbin's fine singing raises it above the level of the plot. In one of my favorite scenes she's about the get thrown off a train, and sings loudly to attract attention.
