VHS : Party Girl (1958)
***** 1958. Directed by Nicholas Ray. Chicago in the early 30's. A dancer, Cyd Charisse, falls in love with Robert Taylor, the lawyer of the local mob. She persuades him to start a new life. Last masterpiece of Nicholas Ray who pays tribute to all precedent gangsters movies. The dance acts of Cyd Charisse are sublime and Robert Taylor's performance beyond comparison. PARTY GIRL is a film that should be in every movie lover's library. If you own a multi-zone DVD player, you have now the opportunity to buy a zone 2 DVD of PARTY GIRL at Amazon.fr. No bonus features but a superb copy. Indispensable.

Its hard for me to put down a Bogart movie. Since he is considered one of the best actors of the last century. Which is true.
But this wasn't the right film for him.
This would've been the perfect frist film for him to direct rather than star in. That is if it wasn't so badly written.
The premise of the film is about the social conditions of inner-city youth. As timely a topic then as it is now.
However the movie as an essay on the subject failed. Both
technical and literally.
It came off too preachy and as I said before, Badly written.
But I give it 3 stars, because of the acting of both stars
Bogart and John Derrick.
I also recomend seeing the film because of Derrick.
This was his first film role. Most people only know him from ... Read More

VHS : King of Kings (1961)
I had bought King of Kings originally on VHS, now that I have purchased it on DVD the clarity of the video is far more superior. As for the movie it gives you an understanding on what Jesus had gone through in his life here on earth, and also to give direction to the people into guiding them in having faith and to believe that God is there to help them. It doesn't matter what you go through God is always there. Overall this is a great movie to start with, very easy to understand, and also to make you think......

I saw this when I was 10 and just saw it again. It was awful then and worse now. A complete waste of time and talent. Idiotic and stupid. Bad, Bad, Bad.

VHS : The Lusty Men
This rodeo movie predates Junior Bonner (1952) & stars Robert Mitchum,
Susan Hayward & George Kennedy (no slouches there!). It is an excellent
script (based on the book of the same name) & is extremely well acted. In my opnion te best rodeo movie ever made. It is readily available on
DVD in England, yet in the US it can only be found on used VHS. ???
There is something wrong here!

6.Macao starring: Robert Mitchum, Jane Russell, William Bendix, Thomas Gomez, Gloria Grahame

VHS : Macao
This is one of Robert Mitchum's coolest films. It is not a dark noir film like "Out of the Past" but a crime caper with a great cast set in an exotic locale. It has its own atmosphere and is a lot of fun for Mitchum fans. This is pure entertainment with a breezy feel all the way through, much the same as "The Big Steal" with Mitchum and Jane Greer.

Mitchum ends up in Macao and is mistaken for William Bendix, a cop looking to extradite casino owner Brad Dexter. Gloria Grahame plays the beautiful and abused ingenue tangled up with Dexter, and would steal this film were it not for the obvious chemistry between Mitchum and Jane Russell.

The two obviously liked each other and had a lot of fun making this film. Mitchum always had nice things to say about Russell whenever asked about the actresses ... Read More

VHS : Flying Leathernecks
*** 1951. Directed by Nicholas Ray and produced by Howard Hughes, RKO's owner at that time. John Wayne and Robert Ryan don't agree with the way to handle the young pilots of the Wildcats squadron during the battle of Guadalcanal. A lot of actual World War II footage, a few air battles but no Nicholas Ray in the picture here except maybe in the scenes between Wayne and Ryan. Average.

8.In a Lonely Place starring: Humphrey Bogart, Gloria Grahame, Frank Lovejoy, Carl Benton Reid, Art Smith

VHS : In a Lonely Place
Bogart plays a mean drunk scriptwriter, and it's one of his best performances. There's a good plot to this and some great scenes, but in places the plot gets a little lost, so it loses a star.

Still well worth seeing, though.

9.On Dangerous Ground starring: Robert Ryan, Ida Lupino, Ward Bond, Charles Kemper

VHS : On Dangerous Ground
In 1952's "On Dangerous Ground," Robert Ryan plays a talented police detective. Unfortunately, he has a reputation for being a bit forceful, and after beating up one too many suspects, he's sent by his superiors to work a murder case in a small town upstate. A young woman has been killed, and the killer is believed to be on foot somewhere in the vicinity. When Ryan arrives, the tension between the family of the murdered girl and him is palpable, as the family wants to bring the killer to justice themselves. They get a lead and start chasing the killer through the snowy countryside. Ida Lupino also co-stars as a young blind woman Ryan meets while working the case.

This low-budget film is a real find. Director Nicholas Ray ("Rebel Without a Cause") injects the film with gritty detail. The prolonged chase scene through ... Read More

10.A Woman's Secret starring: Maureen O'Hara, Melvyn Douglas, Gloria Grahame, Bill Williams, Victor Jory

VHS : A Woman's Secret
*** 1949. Directed by Nicholas Ray. A WOMAN'S SECRET's screenplay was an adaptation of Vicki Baum's Mortgage On Life written by Herman J. Mankiewicz. Maureen O'Hara confesses to the police that she's just shot Gloria Grahame but neither his friends neither Police Insp. Jim Fowler believe her. Nicholas Ray's second film is not as good as his first one THEY LIVE BY NIGHT They Live by Night / Side Street (Film Noir Double Feature) but is still enjoyable. The most interesting idea of the film, apart of the flashback building, is the way Maureen O'Hara describes herself as Gloria Grahame's double. She lives through Gloria -Estrellita- Grahame since the day she lost her voice. Unsettling. If you own a multi zone DVD player, you can buy a DVD zone 2 of this film at Amazon.fr.
