VHS : In the Realm of the Senses (Uncut NC-17 Version)
i am by no means turned off by tastefully done sex scenes, but this movie was just a huge disappointment. i had been curious about it for a while, and when i finally got around to seeing it, it was almost entirely 104 minutes of meaningless, unhealthy, obsessive and unexciting sex. in my book, this movie IS a porn, as all the sex is as graphic as pornos, including oral sex and what follows the act, if you get my groove. although not a typical "money shot," this was surely another version of it, and which i could have gone elsewhere to watch if that's what i had wanted to see [and *ahem*, with well-endowed people, *ahem*.] given that the main woman is an ex-prostitute, perhaps I shouldn't be so surprised that she has limited pass-times and has allowed herself to become such an instrument with ... VHS : Cruel Story of Youth
After releasing his debut film Street of Love and Hope in 1959, Oshima would be quick to release three films in quick succession in 1960: Cruel Story of Youth, Burial of the Sun, and Night and Fog in Japan. While such output might make one think that the end results of the films might be a bit shoddy due to the hastiness in their creation, in fact all three of the films are important films not only within the realms of Oshima's filmic work, but for Japanese new wave cinema as a whole.

Oshima began 1960 with a bang when Cruel Story of Youth was released. A genre film, fully embedded within the late 1950s, early 1960s tradition of youth films or Sun Tribe films made popular by directors Masamura Yasuzo and Nakahira Ko, Cruel Story of Youth goes beyond its formulaic groundings to be ... VHS : Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence
This film presented in a fair manner the abhorrent mentality of the Japanese during the days of their Empire; depicting that reality on film would have required an X rating, because their treatment of non-Japanese humans was beyond atrocious. Things ended in August 1945 exactly as they should have.

VHS : The Sun's Burial
This is a really good film once you get used to the charcters and understand a little about Oshima. There are definitely no heroes here. But you come to admire Hanako's tenacious struggle to survive in the changing underworld of Osaka. What sticks with you afterwards is the incredible beauty of the shots which always seem to take place at dawn or dusk when the sky looks incredible. Combined with the bleak industrial landscape of the city, its haunting.

This is my second favorite Oshima film, my favorite being Death By Hanging which I can't find on video for the life of me. That one will blow your mind.

i had hoped it would be so good, but it was simply boring. if you like implied romance and subtle affairs then you may like this. i did not find it entertaining, but that is not to say you will find it so.

VHS : Violence at Noon
Seeing there's only one review for this precious film so far, and a rather brief one at that, perhaps I could give my two cents on the experience of Violence at Noon.

While the film does use a lot of jump cuts and refuses to give an easy, linear narrative - in a way similar to many French new wave films, as the box helpfully points out - its strength and seductiveness lie in the subject matter.

Oshima has said that, in this film, he wanted to explore the desire-shame complex men have in the act of sex. The result is less straightforward, as the story becomes one of detective hunt in the Present (Who's the Phantom Killer going around in daylight, raping and killing women?), and Past (the 4 main protagonists were members of a failed socialist commune, steeped in love and idealism.)

On a personal ... Read More
