VHS : I Want You
I WANT YOU is the fascinating coming-of-age account of 14-year old professional voyeur, Honda, a mute Balkan orphan emigre, whose link to the world is through his obsessive collection of rather dark data using his inexplicably high-tech sound and video equipment (yep, we're dealing with meta-cinema here). He spends most of his time observing his friend and the object of his affection, hairdresser Helen (yes, Rachel Weisz), and her sociopathic, recently released on parole ex-bf Martin (Alessandro Nivola, LAUREL CANYON). Desensitized to sexuality by his promiscuous, carefree older sister who sings in a Sade-meets-Portishead band and sleeps in the adjacent room, Honda may be gathering explicit material, but he's not some peeping tom getting off; rather, he's trying desperately to make sense of ... Two hours of my time were wasted by watching this dreary film. I kept hoping it would get better, but no. It's relentlessly cruel, achingly futile and supremely depressing. Not even it's two very talented stars could elevate this material. Watch anything else!

I really liked this movie but my husband who is the avid Western movie fan, did not care for it.

VHS : Welcome to Sarajevo
There are few more devastating images than this: a busload of children being shuttled to safety through the bombed-out neigborhoods of Sarajevo, in the former Yugoslavia. The U.N.-led convoy is halted by a band of Serbian roustabouts dressed in their military togs. One, a bearded smart aleck enters the hushed vehicle and proceeds to claim all Muslim children, whose names he reads from a list. As the wailing subsides and the kidnappers drive away carrying the doomed innocents, the unthinkable happens. You are moved.

That's Welcome to Sarajevo in a nutshell-heartbreaking, sincere, and boldly partisan. And smartly, director Michael Winterbottom chooses a gonzo, pseudo-journalistic style that, like those living in the city, has us dodging mortar fire and rushing through the streets to witness the genocide.

VHS : Wonderland (1999)
Only watch this film if you have experienced a profound sense of loneliness at some point in your life.

The storyline isn't anything special, but the STUNNING performances will pull you in. The musical score adds infinite emotion. This film is a small slice of life, and can be a bit too morose for some.

First of all, if you have any interest in the Manchester music scene starting in '76 and ending just before Oasis hit, you need to watch this movie. Second of all, if you want to know more of the real story, watch the movie with the commentary by Tony Wilson. He tells some of what "really" happened, although he tells it with a favorable bent towards himself. It is still one of my favorite all time movies, and because of it I can't listen to "Atmosphere" without bursting into tears, both for Ian and a friend of mine that used to cover it that recently passed away due to epilepsy. R.I.P. Ian and Derek.

VHS : Cinema Europe - The Other Hollywood
I just saw the documentary Cinema Europe: The Other Hollywood.

It should appeal to anyone interested in film history, especially the silent era. Its goal is to document the birth of cinema in Europe and its development all the way to the early years of the sound film - in just 6 hours! Six hours is way to short for such an endeavor but the filmmakers manage to pack amazing amount of information in to these six hours, so much in fact that one is left with the desire to see it immediately again.

The film is in six parts. The first covering the birth of cinema in Europe, the second one is about the Swedish silent film industry, the third one about the German Masters, the fourth one about France, the fifth one about Britain and the last one about the death of silent cinema and the arrival of sound.

One would expect ... Read More

VHS : The Best of Cracker Mysteries
While the "Sopranos" has certainly earned its accolades, to some of us "Yanks", it merely signals that American T.V. has FINALLY caught up with the type of cinematic-quality writing, acting and production that British viewers have been treated to for years on series like "Cracker". Previously only available in the U.S. on cable, ("edited for content"...boo! hiss!) you can now catch the show on video. Once you are introduced to Robbie Coltrane's profane, alcoholic, over-eating, chain-smoking, adulterous, gambling-addicted yet frighteningly perceptive criminal psychologist, you won't soon forget him. Similar in tone to the wonderful "Prime Suspect" series, every episode of "Cracker" is packed with a taut, suspenseful story, gritty, intelligent dialogue and top notch ensemble work from stars down to the bit players. If you can score all the videos and then figure ... Read More

I want to echo other reviewers and say that "Cracker" is arguably the best mystery series ever produced. It is a crime that the entire series is not available on DVD (and yet "Father Ted" is? The mind BOGGLES!!).
