VHS : A Season for Miracles - Hallmark Hall Of Fame
I loved this movie from the moment I first came upon it. The plot is excellent and keeps you deep into the story wondering what will happen next. The actors are marvelous, each in his/her own way, very natural - in fact it reminds me of the old Jimmy Stewart movies that were so heart-warming, but this one is contemporary with modern themes. The film takes place at Christmas which is an added bonus. But I watch this movie throughout the year, whenever it comes on the Hallmark channel or if our family needs a group hug, I just pop it into the VCR. I highly recommend this film.

VHS : Great Texas Dynamite Chase
Seems many of the women who appear in a certain men's magazine have the same aspiration, to make it big as an actress in the movies...some have made the transition (to some degree), but for most, their dreams remain unfulfilled, most likely due to an actual lack of talent. As I said, some did manage to cross over, one in particular being Miss Claudia Jennings, Playmate of the year for 1970. She had a great many qualities, including and easygoing naturalness is front of the camera, attractive features, and a willingness to shed her clothes, this last one particularly handy given the roles offered to her in such exploitive B films like Deathsport (1978), Moonshine County Express (1977), 'Gator Bait (1974), Truck Stop Women (1974), Unholy Rollers (1972), and this film titled The Great Texas Dynamite Chase ... I really didn't think this was a nice adaption from the book. It was too short. But as far as the casting of the characters was concerned, that was very nice. I remember saying to myself while watching, "That is exactly what I thought Lucy should look like."

But then again, Saint Maybe is one of my very most favorite books, so of course I'm critical. It didn't really live up to my expectations

From a cinematic standpoint; Danny De La Paz (Chuco) is all that makes this film work. Not only was he a great actor even as a kid, he may look more natural as a gang member than any actor who's ever played one.

The older brother had a true sense of Chicano pride and was an avid "low rider", but he just came off as sort of a Brandon Walsh type of character. He really seemed to be miscast. A character growing up in that environment should probably be a little rougher around the edges, even if he supposedly isn't a gang member and is trying to steer his younger brother away from the life. The dialog between him and Chuco just came off too much like an "afterschool special".

I'm going to try and watch this again and make sure I'm not just soured because I expected so much more. ... Read More

VHS : Some Kind of Hero
Pryor appeared in a glut of movies in the five years after he blew himself up freebasing. Some were good, some kinda stunk and Some Kind Of Hero fell in the middle of those. The movie can't really decide if it wants to be a drama or a comedy, and while it contains elements of both it isn't particularly funny or particularly moving. Margot Kidder provides a sexy and effective turn as a hooker, and there are a few laughs sprinkled throughout the movie, but unless you're a huge Pryor or Kidder fan, you're not missing much by giving this one a pass.

VHS : Bad News Bears in Breaking Training
Not that long ago before today's little league baseball players dreamed of one day joining the majors because of the 10 to 20 million dollars they could make in a year (yes,a year!),there was this movie,The Bad News Bears in breaking training. What I enjoyed about this movie was that it was one of those classic baseball movies that could never be remade today. After watching this movie back in the day,we all dreamed of having our little league team play in what was at the time a baseball stadium like no other....The Houston Astrodome. In this 2nd chapter of the Bad News Bears trilogy, the San Fernando Valley-based team is given the opportunity to play in an exhibition game vs the home town Toros in the Astrodome. Having abandoned their coach, the coachless team heads to the lonestar state in hopes of living every ... Read More

VHS : To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday
The cd of the movie made from the play TO GILLIAN ON HER 37TH BIRTHDAY, was very helpful for me. The script was a bit hard to follow, due to the fact that one of the female characters has a masculine name. I also wanted to see the eastern seaboard style of beach so that I could make good set drawings and plans. Thank you, Betty
