VHS : White Christmas
I have loved this movie ever since I was a young kid. It is a classic. I watch it every Christmas season just to get me in the spirit. We rarely get snow in South Carolina, but it helps to remind me a bygone days. It's just a fun little movie with some classic actors and actresses that are gone to movie heaven...at least, I hope.

VHS : Casablanca (Aniv B&W)
Casablanca is generally considered to be on of the greatest films of all time. After watching it i can certainly some evidence for it but i'm not sure if i would necessarily hold it in that high regard.

I think a large part of my opinions of this movie come from the fact that it is an older movie and many movies have been influenced directly from it. Watching in today, much of the story, particularly the romance, seemed comical simply because i had seen it used so often. Admittedly, before i saw it i was expecting to not like it at all but luckily i did enjoy most of it. First and foremost i really appreciated the writing. The dialogue, especially between Rick and captain Renault, was both entertaining and intelligent. I found myself enjoying the political intrigue in the film ... Read More

VHS : The Egyptian
This film is fondly remembered from my childhood (Egypt was a terrific craze at the time - King Tut exhibit, Elizabeth Taylor's movie, the Mummy) and I still enjoyed it. But ... its very sexist. All Mika Waltari's (the author of the novel the script is derived form) work has a masochistic woman as the terrible, unattainable, irresistible and finally destroyed woman. Most of his novels have the woman being beaten. This one only dies of a disease (however in poverty and disgrace). So, yes, I still liked it (especially the references to Tutankhamen - see Velikovsky's analogy to the Oedipal myth) but I really look forward to the day when woman writers/directors get together to create these huge romantic epics with women who aren't either doormats for the hero or die.

I FIRST SAW THIS MOVIE AS "THE HELEN MORGAN STORY". I WAS SO INPRESSED I MUST HAVE VIEWED IT 500 TIMES. THE CAST WAS WONDERFUL & THE MOVIE SHOULD HAVE BEEN REVIEWED MUCH BETTER THAT IT WAS. AFTER 50 YEARS IT STILL LIVES WITH THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE SEEN IT.
THE BIG STAR OF THIS MOVIE IS THE WONDERFUL SOUNDTRACK FEATURING GOGI GRANT I ADORE HER AND ALL HER MUSIC AND WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO SEE HER IN CONCERT IN 2002. STILL BEAUTIFUL AND SINGING THOSE GREAT SONGS AT 78 IS A TRIBUTE TO THIS STAR. THIS MOVIE AND SOUNDTRACK HAVE ADDED MUCH JOY TO MY LIFE.

VHS : Sea Wolf (1941)
Edward G. Robinson puts his own brand of cruelty on the role of a freighter captain who tyrannizes his crew and some unexpected passengers (Ida Lupino, John Garfield, Alexander Knox) in this taut, suspenseful psychological melodrama with no shortage of brooding atmosphere.

Based on the famous Jack London story of Wolf Larsen (Robinson), the callous and inhuman skipper of a schooner, who proceeds to make life hell for his crew and his unwilling passengers rescued from a sinking ferryboat. Lupino and Garfield are a couple of losers with a past; Knox is a mild-mannered novelist. The romantic angle between Garfield and Ida is underplayed with the accent more on the brooding tension aboard the schooner.

Under Michael Curtiz' direction, all the performances are first-rate and Erich Wolfgang Korngold's ... Read More

This film begins in Devils's Island in 1895. Three prisoners have escaped. Are they hiding in plain sight? Can they escape on a boat back to France? Can they find passports and money? The convicts meet the shop owner, and we learn about them. Cayenne is hot and humid at Christmas, and the rest of the time. Will the daughter of the shopowner find true love and happiness? Will a letter bring shocking bad news? The story mixes comedy with drama. [Does this film seem dated?] Will unexpected visitors arrive to shake things up? Will the books be fixed for Christmas? Will the three convicts fix the problems for the family?

"Your opinion of me has no cash value." Will there be a disagreeable surprise for Uncle André? Would a new will solve the problems for the family? Will nephew Paul take advantage of the new situation? ... Read More

Whether to rate this 4 or 5 stars is a little difficult. The story is easily 5 stars. There may have been some room for improvement in the production by today's standards. But, the movie tells the story and tells it well nonetheless. It is an important movie more than simply a good movie since it keeps the story of a truly great athlete alive. There may be a tendency for some to rate this lower simply because of the sadness of the story. And I feel comments on casting white actors to play native Americans are unfair since it judges the past by the changed politically correct standards of today. In spite of all that, without this movie, many people today would have no understanding of this remarkable athlete. The injustice of the movie is also a reminder of how seemingly small decisions we all make can affect lives forever. Jim Thorpe ... Read More

This is one of my all-time favorite William Holden movies, the other being "The World of Suzy Wong". Holden is wonderful in this story of a soldier who meets a girl that he wants to come home to. He is torn between trying to stay "safe" for Ellie, while also being a soldier that his buddies can rely on in battle. The chemistry between Holden and Olsen is great; just enough to keep you intrigued without the blatant sex scenes of today's films. PLEASE, PLEASE put this wonderful love story on DVD SOON!!

VHS : Charge of the Light Brigade
For some reason, THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE (directed in 1936 by Michael Curtiz) is always forgotten when people talk about Errol Flynn's movies. It's one of the all-time greats for Flynn, in which he plays gallant Major Vickers, an officer in the 27th Lancers, whose personal story entwines with the horrors of the Crimean War.

Major Geoffrey Vickers (Errol Flynn) is engaged to lovely Elsa Campbell (Olivia de Havilland), the daughter of one of his superiors (Donald Crisp). Unbeknowst to Geoffrey, Elsa has also fallen in love with his younger brother Perry (Patric Knowles). This stormy love triangle is set against the violent conflict in the Crimean. When the British outpost of Chukoti is stormed and all the occupants massacred by the bloodthirsty forces of Surat Khan (C. Henry Gordon), Geoffrey and Elsa narrowly escape ... Read More
