VHS : Shake Hands With the Devil
James Cagney made according my personal opinion, a tour de force performance and his most superb artistic achievement, personifying the leader of IRA. Through the innocent gaze of a naïve student who sudden and accidentally becomes involved in rebel activities, Cagney will exert on him a spelling influence but gradually he will realize the core of the human being behind the mask: a murderous fanatic.

A ravishing jewel of Michael Anderson, one of the best and remarkable British filmmakers ever.

As I am currently changing all my VHS tapes over to DVD's I am struggling with some really good "old" mostly historical tapes that I don't think will ever be transferred over to DVD, and this is one of them.....the only copy I had, prior to acquiring this one is an old tape from the actual TV drama itself which has been played so often that it is skipping and missing words. I believe that some individual was selling a DVD that they had made but the review was that the picture quality was lousy, so I won't go there. My personally opinion on this movie is that IT IS THE VERY BEST PORTRAYAL of Catherine the Great of Russia. Unfortunately there was a much more recent remake with Catherine Zeta Jones in the starring role....forget that! Julia Ormond leaves Zeta Jones in the dust when it comes to playing ... Read More

VHS : Sea Wolf
You don't need the summery of Jack London's story about Captain Wolf Larsen aka `'The Sea Wolf' and two survivors of shipwreck Humphrey Van Weyden and Flaxen Brewster. Other reviewers have already done it, so please read them. I only add my feelings about the made-for-TV production, which I think could be better with different casting.

There are two things that I cannot understand about the production. Charles Bronson might be an ideal choice for the Captain if the film had been made during the 70s or 80s, This film was shot in 1993, which means Bronson is already over 70 years-old, while Christopher Reeve was just over 40. It is clear that if it really comes to the hand-to-hand battle, there would be no chance for Bronson or his character to win it especially with some other hostile crew around him, ... Read More

I've watched my video copy of this movie twice. Enjoyed it both times. Plot may be kind of crazy, but so what? It's still a fun movie. The plot has been described successfully by another reviewer, so I'll not waste time describing it again.

Main reason I'm writing this "review". Here in the United States, this movie is known as MURDER BY PHONE. It was released on Warner Home Video. It runs 80 mins. I have a copy of it. BUT, THIS MOVIE WAS A CANADIAN-MADE FEATURE AND THE ORIGINAL RUNNING TIME WAS 95 MINS. IT WAS EDITED BY 15 MINS. FOR ITS AMERICAN RELEASE. HOW DO I KNOW THIS, YOU MAY ASK? WELL, SINCE YOU'VE GOT THIS FAR I WILL GLADLY EXPLAIN. I ALSO HAVE A VIDEO COPY ON THE ASTRAL VIDEO LABEL FROM CANADA. RELEASED IN 1983. RUNNING TIME IS 95 MINS AS STATED ON BACK OF THE BOX. TITLE ON FRONT OF BOX IS "BELLS". ... Read More

I have to admit that I liked the epcot-esque city in which this story is based. Its retro sci-fi look is great and lends itself well to the story. The special effects range from "good for the time" to just plain "bad". The story itself drags on a little too long. There is no reason this movie should be 120 minutes. The premise, however, is good and has not been well duplicated since the original. I simply wish sci-fi movies could have avoided "coming of age" during the time of psychedelic filmography. Hard core classic sci-fi fans might be intrigued, but I fear most everyone else will be bored with this film. I can say it's average, and that's about all.

The 1930's was the heyday of Tarzan, the Lone Ranger, the Shadow, the Spider, the Green Hornet, Captain Midnight, Gene Autry, Flash Gordon, and eventually Superman and Batman. A great pantheon of pop culture heroes flourished in pulp magazines, comic strips, radio shows, and movie serials.

The 1960's gave us Adam West as Batman, Derek Flint, Maxwell Smart, 007, and many other hero spoofs(not to mention the theater then unfolding in the socio-political realms); the concept of the hero emerged from this period battered and shaken.

The early 1970's saw the emergence of a new type of rather angry anti-hero: Dirty Harry, Shaft, Billy Jack, Superfly, etc.

George Pal had accurately predicted the sci-fi craze of the 1950's, and so he produced the first picture of that cycle as well as producing ... Read More
