VHS : Above & Beyond
Paul Tibbets-Enola Gay both names that mean part of the history. This is an absorbing subject, carefully handled about the officer who piloted and drooped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
Even I think Taylor wasn't the most appropriate actor for this role, ( I just can think in three names for that moment: Robert Donat, Fredric March and Michael Redgrave) and the film surely would have elevated to a major status.
The only default to my mind is the real nightmare derived from this action; the awful sequels that surrounded the mind and personality of Tibbets are simply absent. There was a very long introduction showing the backgrounds.
A well supporting cast accompanied him. Good point for Melvin Frank.
Two years later after this film was released, the American journalist ... Read More

VHS : Facts of Life
There is something splendid about this little comedy starring two of the most hilariously on-point comedic minds of all time; Bob Hope and Lucille Ball. Yes, even though some of the gags don't quite work, Ball and Hope are never short of amazing and they help to elevate the `at times' ridiculousness of the script. I say `at times' and I mean it, because for the most part this movie delivers quite strongly. It is only in parts where things don't quite add up.

Ball and Hope play Kitty and Larry respectively. Neither can stand one another yet both are married to the others best friend. Kitty is married to Jack, a nice and responsible man, and Larry is married to Mary, a charming bride; but both Mary and Jack are at times too preoccupied with their own lives that Kitty and Larry wind up feeling ... I remember watching this Gina Lollobrigida movie with my family many many years ago. We enjoyed it very much. My sister and I recently saw "Mama Mia" at the theater. It has the same story line but we would both love to own this older movie because it was a childhood favorite. I think other baby boomers would love it too!

VHS : Jayhawkers
The Jayhawkers is a perfect example of good entertainment that isn't necessarily factual. Lots of liberties are taken with truth about the Jayhawkers, their location, and activities.

The important thing is that the movie, starring Fess Parker (of Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett fame) and Jeff Chandler is exciting, entertaining and fun to watch. Parker plays an ex-con who is forced to infiltrate the Jayhawkers, led by Chandler.

Don't watch movies for historical accuracy. Watch them because they're fun!

Once again Danny Kaye weaves his very own special type of comedy in a very engaging film. The color, pagentry and the acting are all great. A wonderful film for all of all ages...

VHS : A Touch of Class
This is one of my favorite romantic comedies, for several reasons: good writing, fine acting, London in the early 70's, and Glenda Jackson. It evokes a time which was memorable for those of us who were born and raised during the turbulent 60's. After a decade of such angst, society seemed to regain a bit of self-deprecating humor with the dawn of the 70's. It is precisely that brand of humor that I find appealing in this film. The dialogue is sharp, sophisticated, and has the great good fortune to be delivered by two fine actors; Glenda Jackson being especially deft, tossing out acidly witty, intelligent retorts with withering English stoicism. She is clearly the "class" in the film.

Yes, it is "dated" -- the clothes, the coifs, phrases such as, "He's my male secretary", the rather pointed portrayal of ... Read More

Yet another Simon and Lemmon partnership that still holds up well today! Lemmon and Bancroft are teriffic in this very funny film. In the same vein as 'The Out-Of-Towners, but I think this film is a bit better. This DVD has a nice transfer and some interesting extras.

This is my all time favorite Goldie movie and George Segal is charming too. But forget about them, the HORSE steals the show! This movie is a reason to laugh even if you haven't seen it in years.
Doesn't any one remember that in the 70's all the heroes were drunken losers?

Quality of DVD excellent.
As an old-fashioned musical there is something missing from the entire production to make it a true classic that would warrant watching it many times like SINGING IN THE RAIN or SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS. Political theme still surpirisingly timely. Boy meets girl etc. concept cute. Leads talented. I think what's missing is inspired innovative choeorgraphy - lots of box and circle formations and bouncing up and down which is actually boring to watch. If you've seen just about every musical in the A and B leagues and you have time on your hands or if you're related to one of the cast members, Li'l Abner is just OK as an ole relic.

VHS : Strange Bedfellows
Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida (the former co-stars of 1961's "Come September") once again make a smashing team in the cute romantic comedy STRANGE BEDFELLOWS (produced and directed in 1965 by Melvin Frank).

Hudson plays Carter Harrison, a womanising company exec who marries Antonia (Lollobrigida), an Italian spitfire who is heavily into art and politics. When their marriage fails, Carter doesn't hear from Toni for many years, until his boss decides Carter will get a promotion if he can prove that he is a respectable (and, more to the point, MARRIED) man. He decides to lead Toni on to get the promotion but finds himself falling in love with her all over again. The memorable supporting cast includes Terry-Thomas, Nancy Kulp, Gig Young, Arthur Haynes and Edward Judd.

As other reviewers have noted, the ... Read More
