This is a delightful film by Argentine director Maria Luisa Bemberg (who directed her first film at age 56! - an inspiration to us all). The movie takes place in a small Argentine town by the name of San Jose de los Altares, some time in the 1930s. Like most small towns, it is a place filled with hypocrisy and gossip. When the movie opens, the camera catches the town priest without his pants (literally) in bed with his mistress, and we soon discover that the brothel is the place to go if you're looking for the mayor or other important town figures. This movie is absolutely amazing! I remember seeing it many years ago, when I was a little girl, and I remember my parents watching it on TV, and there were certain scenes that I never forgot. I finally managed to find the movie and I couldn't wait to buy it. It's an interesting forbidden love story, and it's interesting to see the barriers, the social classes, and how religious fanatics, and the laws can dictate people's lives. Watch it.

A very strong and defiant statement. A fit title for the lifestory of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. She is a Mexican holy woman and a genius with much intellectual prowess who lived before the time of feminism. She is most haunting and fascinating person. Her beauty was also legend. This story must be told. (spanish)
