Warning: I'm a spoiler type reviewer from time to time, when my reviews take on specific aspects of the plot, so be forewarned. Try as I might, I just simply couldn't get into this one. Perhaps it was the washed out tones; perhaps it was the drawn-out approach--I'm not really sure, but though this was by no means a "bad" movie, I didn't really find it to be very much of an "effective" movie (words that I understand are so much more arbitrary than their common uses). So, basically, the deal here is that a series of adolescent boys' deaths sets off an investigation and anxiety in a small provincial town, triggering a witch hunt. I was surprised to see this movie was made as late as 1975--I'd thought it was late 50s or early 60s. The acting is downright corny at times--very staged and unrealistic--but the drama and suspense keep you watching. I give it two stars for poor acting compared to what we're used to today, but probably a three for entertaining plot. I haven't read the book, so I don't know how closely it sticks to the real story, but my daughter says it's nothing like the more recent version. (The dog, by the way, is more than a super-hero--he's all but immortalized.) Again, souped up performances compared to today's more realistic acting--but then, such was acting in days gone by. If you can stand the repeated killing, not a bad "family" movie.

"Manhattan Baby" opens with an excellent prologue set in atmospheric ruins of the Egyptian pyramids. Lucio Fulci seems very at home filming these photogenic sequences which set up a rather daft story about possession via an ancient amulet. Naturally the possessed individual is an irritating child (influences of "The Exorcist"), and Fulci's reliance on his two child actors, and lots of narrative inconsistencies ultimately undoes the promise of this fine opening. Fulci's usually insane editing patterns create an immediate sense of disconnectedness and a filmic space in which time and its ever shifting progress cannot be trusted.
