VHS : Great Santini
Two films were released in 1979, "Apocalypse Now" and "The Great Santini," wherein Robert Duvall played essentially the same character -- a gung-ho, half-crazed Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps.

In "The Great Santini" Duvall plays fighter pilot commander Bull Meechum, who drives his family to his new base in Beaufort, SC (where the film was actually filmed). It's peace-time in the early 60s before the Vietnam War. Bull is ultra-charismatic but flawed. At any given time you either love him or hate him; you'll see this same struggle with his family members. He generally treats them like Marine subordinates which, for the most part, works and they seem to have a lot of good times together, but there's a darkside as Bull is overly competitive, especially with his just-turning ... VHS : Class
Looking at "Class" again more than 20 years after I first saw it, I found it a better movie than I remembered. I could only recall a mediocre teen dramedy starring two Brat Packers, but this script is as smart and funny as it is flawed. Jonathan (Andrew McCarthy) is a working class young man who attends a posh prep school his senior year in hopes of getting into Harvard. His introduction to Vernon Academy is a humiliating prank played by his rich roommate Skip (Rob Lowe), but after a few bumps, they become fast friends. Determined to help Jonathan out with the ladies, Skip packs him off to a pick-up bar in Chicago one weekend. In spite of his clumsiness -or because of it- Jonathan meets an exciting older woman named Ellen (Jacqueline Bisset), and they begin an affair. But Ellen eventually discovers ... Read More

VHS : The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea
"The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea" was a shocking film when first released in 1976 because of its blend of sex and mystery-bred tension. The newly-released DVD is very high quality and the content--based on Yukio Mishima's novel--remains erotic and scary. The performances are very good, with Sarah Miles especially showing her strengths (and lots of other things). The film is polarizing; many will stop watching in the first 30 minutes, but most will find it captivating.
