Duck Soup (1933) - Leo McCarey

The Marx Brothers are almost totally unique in the history of film, and when I say unique, I'm not even referring to how innovative they are. True, they definitely developed a particular style of comedy that I would say is probably now the dominant form in all of American comedy. How would I characterize it? It's difficult, but it includes a combination of anarchy, irony, and self-awareness. I paraphrase Roger Ebert when he states that you can clearly see what the Marx Bros. influenced, but its difficult to see what influenced them, other than the rich tradition of music hall.

However, again, when I say that they are totally unique, I'm referring to something else. If one notices carefully at all the groups and individuals that the ... Read More

VHS : Good Sam
I once heard that common courtesy is the greatest investment; it costs nothing, but it pays great dividends. In this movie, Cooper's unbiased, unconditional sympathy for any and all supplicants takes that concept to the next level.

What has been reviled by some reviewers as the good Samaritan taken to extremes, is in fact a paean for benevolence in its purest form. The man who brought his wife, children, and even his church pastor to disbelief proved that when it comes to philanthropy, it pays to be nice every time. The burden -- of occasional parasites who can't resist taking advantage of a man who can't say no -- shrinks miraculously thanks to Hollywood's accelerated, though still plausible vindication.

Over the objections of his boss, Sam takes the time to give directions ... Read More

VHS : Ruggles of Red Gap
Charles Laughton is sublime as Marmaduke Ruggles, long time British manservant to the Earl of Burnstead in the delightful comedy "Ruggles Of Red Gap. After years of servility Ruggles' services are won as a result of a poker bet to Egbert Floud of Red Gap, Washington played by Charlie Ruggles. Floud, a throwback to the days of the old West, is being cultured and refined while in Paris by his wife Effie played by a haughty and domineering Mary Boland.

The plan is for Ruggles to accompany the Flouds back to Red Gap. With much hidden trepidation, the genteel Laughton assents to his new assignment in the frontier like Red Gap. Egbert, who is not used to the idea of servitude treats Laughton with cordiality and equality which is unfamiliar to him.

When they arrive in Red Gap, Egbert's ... Read More

What a classy dame! Mae West can deliver one liners second to none, and she does so in this great movie about diamonds, seduction and men. It's a common thread with her, but it never gets old. Of all the movies she's done, it's easy to say that she sings the best in the Belle of the Nineties. If you're going to get one Mae West movie, you better add this one to your collection.

VHS : An Affair to Remember (1957)
Leo McCarey's 1957 remake of his 1939 Love Affair stars Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr as two completely different people who end up falling in love on a transatlantic cruise. Nickie Ferrante (Grant) is a smooth-talking playboy who has a new girl every night, but his free reign as a bachelor is coming to an end as he's about to marry millionaire Lois Clark. Terry McKay is a nightclub singer in Boston and is in a long-term relationship. Nickie pursues Terry, who at first refuses, but the two fall deeply in love aboard the SS Constitution and try to hide their blossoming romance from curious onlookers and the ship's photographer. Nickie takes Terry to meet his octogenarian grandmother during a shore leave, and Terry is deeply attracted to the peaceful haven overlooking the Mediterranean.

When they arrive in New York, they ... Read More

VHS : Once Upon a Honeymoon
This movie is a romantic comedy about a radio reporter named Patrick O'Toole (Cary Grant), and a socialite named Katie O'Hara, aka Katherine Butt-Smith. The movie is set during the World War II amidst Nazi invasion of Europe, and concentration camps, which makes the theme of the movie a little insensitive and offensive. On the positive note, the movie has an excellent cast; Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers (in my judgment they make an excellent couple), and it is directed by Academy award winning director Leo McCarey, known for classics such as; An Affair to Remember; Love Affair; The Awful Truth; and Going My Way.

When gold-digger Katie travels from to Austria to marry Baron Von Luber (Walter Slezak), amidst Fuehrer's invasion; Pat O'Toole prepares to cover the big story of an American showgirl marrying a rich European aristocrat. ... Read More

VHS : Love Happy (B&W)
LOVE HAPPY is the Marx Brothers' final starring feature film, though the spotlight here is on Harpo (the real star of the picture), while Chico and especially Groucho have supporting roles. This one is primarily for Marx completists, who will be delighted to learn that the print used for this DVD transfer runs 91 minutes rather than the standard 85-minute version previously released on VHS ... and seen on TV and in theatrical revivals. I'm not sure where this longer cut has been languishing all these years (the DVD is a Republic Pictures/Lions Gate release, yet there's a Paramount/Viacom logo too), but the shorter edition is the one that's been in general circulation over the past four decades. It's surprising that Republic didn't toot their own horn about having made this longer version available. Did they even realize it was a longer version?
