VHS : Return to Salem's Lot
If your a fan of 80's B-Movies like myself, this one is a must-have in your collection. While this doesn't compare to the original Salem's Lot, there is still entertaining humor to be had in this one. Most will rate this film terrible, but as the title of my review goes, it's only for the campy B-Movie collector only. too bad it's not officially on DVD....

VHS : As Good As Dead
Two friends Susan (Crystal Bernard) and Nicole (Traci Lords) exchange identities so that Susan's insurance can cover an operation for Nicole. Looks like a small medical mistake causes Nicole's death. Or was there more too it? Now Susan officially dead and still in the persona of Nicole can not go to the authorities and enlists the help of Ron Holden (Judge Reinhold) to help sort things out. It dose not take long for us to figure it out and spend the rest of the time kibitzing. Of course Susan never listens to us.

This film was made for TV and it shows in the formula story and lo budget setting. However veteran actor Judge Reinhold does his best.

"Q" is one of my favorite films. Helmed by one of the great cult writer/directors, Larry Cohen, this movie is an outrageous blast! Michael Moriarty is PERFECT as the much put-upon Jimmy Quinn, a small-time hood/loser who stumbles upon the hidden nest of an ancient creature that's decapitating roof-top sun-bathers and window-washers! Awesome! Of course, being a cynical, world-weary type of fella, Quinn decides to keep the location of the murderous monster a secret until the city coughs up some serious green. Moriarty's voice inflections and mannerisms are absolutely infectious! At one point, at the end of his emotional rope, he lies down on the couch and drones out a line from a scat song he performs on the soundtrack: "Evil dream, go away!" David Carradine provides solid support, also, as the ... Read More

VHS : The Ambulance
There is no denying the fact that director Larry Cohen has made his mark in suspense/horror cinema for several decades, he most recently found a venue to air his work with the extremely witty psycho-killer short for the "Masters of Horror" series entitled "Pick Me Up". But like any "cult" director, he is bound to have his fantastical as well as his disappointed. It is like a wave, with every great curl there is a powerful downfall. For example, David Gordon Green is directing the next film from the "Superbad" creators, a man who prided himself on such instant classics like "George Washington" and "All the Real Girls" will stoop to a dumber, probably more lucrative level. Larry Cohen has found his pitfall with the bomb of a film entitled "The Ambulance". Ripping from the pages of what seems like a Crichton-esque ... Read More

VHS : It's Alive
In "celebration" of the Halloween spirit, my wife and I watched a couple of old horror flicks in recent days. As a lark, one of our selections was Larry Cohen's IT'S ALIVE. I had not seen the film in about 20 years, and I knew perfectly well it was not exactly a class act. But I was looking for modest, guilty-pleasure diversion.

It was a diversion, but not altogether a pleasure. Made in 1973/74, it absolutely REEKS of the sensibilities of that fashion-challenged time. Everyone smokes...everywhere. Bosses still played "grab a**" with their secretaries. Fabrics, carpets, cars and curtains were all shades of brown ("earth tones"). Everyone drank hard liquor. If the TV series MAD MEN slavishly recreates the feel of the early `60s...IT'S ALIVE actually gives a somewhat convincing idea of what the early ... Read More

VHS : Wicked Stepmother
After a 60 year acting career, a double mastectomy, followed immediately by a dabilitating stroke, 'The First Lady of American Cinema', Bette Davis kept acting. While she was living with terminal cancer, the daughter she adored wrote a stupid, burnable book about Davis which is obviously trying to capitalize upon her mother's successful career & great name; rather than being based in truth. Since it is a slam against Bette Davis as a mother, which has long been discredited, it is so true to the character of Bette Davis, who loved to play pranks & be humorous, to leave us with "Wicked Stepmother" as her final film. If audiences can place this film in the contexts of Davis flipping-the-bird to her spiteful, ingrate of a daughter, then "Wicked Stepmother" is extremely funny & high camp. Bette Davis had no need to do this ... Read More

You couldn't ask for too much more of a black all star cast than this. You've got Jim Brown, Fred Williamson, Pam Grier, Ron O'neal and Richard Roundtree battling modern day gangs. They're kicking butt and taking names later. Paul Winfield and Isabel Sanford did pretty good as well in one of their last performances in movies. May their souls rest in peace. This is a good one to have in your collection.

VHS : Hell Up in Harlem
Hell Up In Harlem is a sequel to Black Caesar. Black Caesar, clearly "inspired by" the classic gangster film, Little Caesar, showed the evolution of Tommy Gibbs (Fred Williamson) from errand boy for the mob to Black Godfather of Harlem. It was never in any danger of winning an Oscar, but it was a classic blaxploitation movie and well worth seeing.

You had to suspend your disbelief a little to enjoy it, (the Black Gangsters are better than the Italian ones at everything, including speaking Sicilian and if the Mafia was as bumbling as they are shown in these films, it seems like somebody would have pushed them out of power years ago.) . . . but the movie was fun and the characters were interesting. The story, although not original, held together well and more importantly, held our attention.

The movie did ... Read More

This was a truly excellent movie, a gangster flick drawing heavily from the blaxploitation genre. Fred Williamson plays Tommy Gibbs, a young tough who works his way from shoeshine/mob messenger boy to crime boss. He uses the Italian mob and the corrupt cop who beat him severely as a teenager to gain a foothold and then turns the tables on all of them. None of it seems to matter, though, as he still can't satisfy the women in his life, no matter what he can give them. As his world begins to crumble around Tommy, the film builds to a stirring climax. Tommy's final revenge on the crooked cop is both poetic and brutal. If you haven't seen it, I won't spoil it for you.

The story moves at a quick pace, never dragging. There's plenty of nudity, violence, and cursing, so if that sort of thing bothers you, stay away. Fred Williamson is very ... Read More
