1.Odd Obsession starring: Machiko Kyô, Ganjiro Nakamura, Junko Kano, Tatsuya Nakadai, Jun Hamamura
directed by: Kon Ichikawa

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Odd Obsession
One of Ichikawa's first films, marred by a bad ending. Four characters are involved in a strange menage-a-quatre: an aging man who has high blood pressure and is worried about his virility; his dutiful wife; a young doctor he "uses" as an aprodisiac; and his daughter who becomes jealous of her mother.

The old man decides that seeing his wife dally with another man (the doctor) excites him, makes him feel younger; he talks her into continuing her philandering while he looks on. This "excitement" eventually kills him, but in the meantime his wife has come to enjoy her affair with the doctor and is not upset at her husband's death. Her daughter learns of the arrangement and becomes upset and jealous of her mother; this does little to alter her mother's behavior, however. At the end ... Read More

VHS : Tokyo Olympiad
In his enlightening commentary, Peter Cowie tells us that there are only two truly estimable Olympics films: Leni Riefenstahl's "Olympia" and this, Kon Ichikawa's "Tokyo Olympiad." Artistically - with all that word implies when it comes to a documentary, Ichikawa chronicles the 1964 games held in Japan. The games themselves are less important, it seems, than the athletes and Ichikawa's obsession with body, with form, with endurance, or sometimes lack thereof. Thus, in one track competition, the leader is shown only at the end, Ichikawa instead focusing on what interests him about this particular race. There is very little narration, and what there is, is sometimes decidedly objective, such as a seemingly prolonged musing over the fact that a competitor from Chad must be feeling rather lonely ... VHS : The Burmese Harp
Quite simply, this is one of the most emotionally beautiful movies I have ever seen. I can't entirely explain why I find it so touching. Amid the most horrific of experiences, a kind, simple young man tries to make sense of his participation in this horror.

The movie is filled with singing and harp playing. In the abject misery of defeat and desolation, the soldiers cheer and comfort themselves with song. They sing in unison to strengthen their unity and patriotism but one, the harpist, is separated. He is wounded and nursed back to health by a Buddhist monk. After he recovers, he experiences a spiritual epiphany not unlike Saul on the road to Demascus.

He wanders alone and seperate across the blasted landscape littered with piles of war dead. In his confusion and ... Read More

VHS : An Actor's Revenge
My review refers to the Region 2 DVD. Many people are only familiar with director Kon Ichikawa's films "Fires On The Plain," or "The Burmese Harp." However, this talented director also made some other very memorable films. One in particular is the great cinematic masterpiece, "An Actor's Revenge," [aka: Yukinojo henge]. This film is a remake for the 1935 film, which I have never seen, also starring Kazuo Hasegawa in the title role. A little background is necessary for this film. First, Kabuki was actually created by women for women, and it is known for its theatrical style. The use of elaborate costumes, beautiful stage sets, and terrific virtuoso performers are all part of Kabuki plays. However, in 1629 females were outlawed from performing, and men took over the role. Even today, men play the female roles, known as ... Read More

VHS : Being Two Isn't Easy
Cute look at a young couple raising a toddler. Can they agree on how to parent him? Are they neglectful, over-anxious or just simply typical? What will moving in with grandma entail? How might the boy perceive the adults' actions and what might explain some of his? From renowned director Kon Ichikawa. Had to have had at least a minor influence on the Look Who's Talking trilogy, this, to my knowledge, the first film where a not-yet-talking child's "thoughts" are relayed. Pleasant, wholesome...

VHS : Fires on the Plain
This movie is overdramatized and ridiculous. How can a person who has been malnourished have the strength to scramble around evading an enemy force? Try not eating and drinking small amounts of dirty water for a week and see how strong you are at the end of it. If you really want to experience war then get off the couch and go see it for yourself then talk about the evils of war.
