VHS : Tarzan (Walt Disney)
Somewhere in 2000, Disney quietly launched a special 2 disc collector's edition of "Tarzan" the same year as its paltry one disc edition. For some reason it advertised the one disc version heavily, which is a shame because the collector's edition is a gem not to be missed by fans. Unfortunately I didn't know about it until years after its release, and by then it was out of print, hard to find, and expensive. Luckily I found a copy that was decently priced, and was finally able to get my hands on this remarkable edition. I see this as the "Tarzan" DVD for adults: instead of cartoony illustrations on the jacket, there's Glen Keane's famous sketch of Tarzan peering at you with those intense eyes. The menus are extremely well designed and the commentaries are entertaining and insightful. It's ... Read More

I purchases this DVD for my mother for Mother's Day. It arrived and we were treated again to a funny little girl seemingly 'on her own'. We thoroughly enjoyed her shenanigans and would recommend it to anyone for a good family night film.

I didn't expect to like this movie, but it turned out to be entertaining and kind of cute, a solid 3 star offering - and it's definitely just right for the kids. Adults will find the plot transparently obvious and standardly Disney-predictable, but then it *is* supposed to be a kids' movie! If nothing else, grownups, get it to watch the usually serious Ioan Gruffudd (Horatio Hornblower and Fantastic Four) play tug-of-war with his dogs and get made fun of by his parrot, who was voiced by the incomparable Eric Idle.

This movie is a great deal of fun for kids and adults -- and I particularly enjoyed seeing Julie Andrews doing physical comedy. I'd love to see her do more of it! I suspect she was receiving cancer treatments for her throat during the weeks of filming since she has more weight on than usual and her voice is somewhat raspy. Given that she was probably feeling like camel scat a hair this side of hell, I really admire her for putting so much into her performance. Get this movie -- you'll love it every year.

My 3 year old son loves this movie. He first saw it at his daycare, so I had to get it for him. There's music, singing and "goofy" things going on amidst a good father/son story. The only thing I found a little off-putting is the reference to the "electric chair" . Try explaining that to your kids. So far, my son hasn't asked...
