One must never compare the Stage to the Film when it comes to musicals. Sometimes they are better than the original. Sometimes worse. ALWAYS different! That's just the nature of the transition. This is one of the great film musicals of all time. It's just not Sandy Wilson's "The Boy Friend". I love the stage play as well. This is a musical film about a production of the stage musical with all kinds of backstage intrigue as well as the terrific device of seeing a number "as is", as the director would have done if only he had money, and as the film maker in attendance would make a movie of the same number. Divine!

This is one of my favorite movies. The music is great. The acting is great. For me, everything is great except that it also has many sad scenes, however we have to understand that it is an interpretation of the life of Tchaikovsky.

I rented this film and Truffault's Day for Night one night, and showed them to a love interest of mine at the time. I showed her Day for Night, which she absolutely hated and despised (despite the fact it was a dubbed, pan and scan version, so she couldn't have used the "subtitled/letterbox" excuse many use). She stopped calling me after that. I wished I had shown her The Devils, as it would have warped her fragile, little mind and stayed in her subconscious for the rest of her life. It would have become a permanent parasite, popping up occasionally and messing with her brain when she least expected it. This is one of Ken Russell's most amazing, outrageous, and thought provoking/brain melting films. It is arguably his best work, where the frenzy and mania reach dizzying heights. It is not a work where ... Read More

VHS : Dante's Inferno
Reminiscing about their encounters in late Victorian and Edwardian London with survivors of the original Pre-Raphaelite movement, Joseph and Elizabeth Pennell observed that these artists and writers even in their later years were lively company, and they lamented that their "official" biographers had transformed them into a bunch of prigs. While much can be said against this Ken Russell "docudrama," he undeniably asserts the periodic flamboyance - ascending at times to zaniness - of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and some of his Pre-Raphaelite cohorts. It's fun to see a youthful Rossetti (Oliver Reed) and Lizzie Siddal (played by look-alike Judith Paris) horsing around on the beach as they elude the censure of their patron John Ruskin, or Rossetti in still higher spirits with his mistress Fanny Cornforth and with Holman ... Jack Nicholson singing ? What could possibly go wrong ? I felt like I took a tab of acid in post-war London. Ken Russell is one of those insane visionaries that goes waaaaaayyyyyy beyond conventional film making. There are some artsy-fartsy themes to it, but, then again, Ann Margret is covered in baked beans. DON'T UNDERESTIMATE KEITH MOON'S PERFORMANCE !

6.Aria starring: John Hurt, Theresa Russell, Stephanie Lane, Roy Hyatt, Sevilla Delofski

The ideal use for this DVD is to play the soundtrack on your computer while you are doing other things. It is apparent that Hollywood film directors are the shall, owest, least creative tribe on the planet, who equjate art with nakedness and have no imagination at all./ The one star is earned by the Verdi "Un Ballo" episode at the beginning which goes back to the attempted assasination of King Zog of Albania for a really thought-out tie in. Evderyhthing else visually on this disk is trash. The music selected is great and the singers are outstanding, with the tenor selection exceptional (no Pavarotti!) For listening only!

I had wanted to see "Lisztomania" since first reading about it in the brilliant "Golden Turkey Awards" in 1980. True to its reputation, Roger Daltrey plays Franz Liszt in a highly stylized (major understatement) manner as an oversexed rock star, singing his way from one predicament to another and making an arch enemy of Richard Wagner, who exists solely to subjugate the world to Nazi Germany, and who is a vampire on the side. I appreciated that Wagner's hat said "Nietzsche," which made his philosophy somewhat evident early on. Nice touch, Ken.

In the midst of this bedlam Pope Ringo (I'm not kidding: Ringo Starr is the Pope, complete with eye patch and cowboy boots) makes Liszt attempt to convert Wagner to Catholicism in exchange for his (the Pope's) permission for Liszt to marry. Confused? Don't be. Director Ken ... Read More

Before there was "Tommy", and "The Boyfriend", and a lot of other Ken Russell films that deserve to be forgotten, there was "Women in Love", "The Music Lovers", "The Devils", and this little gem. Read the other reviews for their insightful comments. I would only like to add that what sets this particular film apart is Russell's use of the sculptor's own works to emphasize the beauty and originiality of Gaudier-Breszka's vision. Russell's films (even the bad ones) are all visually striking. Here he has help from the small extant collection of the sculptures themselves. As befits the biography of a visual artist, this film is a treat for the eye as well as the spirit.

The movie was pretty much a dud until the final one "Wet". WOW!
They saved the best short film for last! Cynda is incredibly gorgeous and the camera didn't miss her beautiful body. It was tastefully done and it didn't go overboard with exploitation. The eye popping "money shot" is when she stood up in the tub with suds running down her backside, WOW!!
That shot alone gives this movie 5 stars from me. This review refers to the DVD version

What if Monty Python made a vampire movie ?

That would make a good tag line to describe this film.

And while our baddie is not a vampire, but rather a
snake goddess, a snake goddess with really big fangs,
you get the idea.

Hugh Grant, early in his career plays a hair-brained
dare-do-all. Catherine Oxenberg is his dumb,
blond bombshell girlfriend (apologies to Ms.
Oxenberg). And some awesome british character
actors fill out the entourage.

And how does one go about fighting a snake goddess ?
Why with Hindu snake charmer music blasting from the
castle walls over loud speakers and an angry little
snake-hating mongoose of course!

This is not your typical Horror movie with axe and
chainsaw weilding psychopaths. But ... Read More
