VHS : Ken Burns: Thomas Jefferson (2pc)
The DVD was informative and engaging. Burns utilizes the most compelling narrators and resources to substatiate his effort. His history becomes dramatic, multi-faceted, and memorable.

VHS : Frank Lloyd Wright - A film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick
I don't know if it is because it wasn't just Ken Burns or what but it wasn't A+ like his most of his other works. It left out some details that seemed needed for the story. I own most all of Ken Burns work but this is one I just rented and didn't buy.

VHS : The Congress
If you know anythin about politics, and are interested in the INDIVIVUAL congresspeople that have served, than this is not the documentary for you. In by far the most shallow documentary I have seen, this movie glosses over entire eras (almost all of the 1920's, the 80's, the 90's, the late 40's), and speaks of only about 10 congressman in the 20th century. Not only that, but Ken Burns seems to want to prove that the congress is more insignificant than we think. He talks at length about Everett Dirksen, who was a senator, and spends four minutes on each decade, and RARELY goes into specific congressman. This is incredibly pithy, no Newt Gingrich, no John Nance Garner, barely any congressman. This documentary despises profiles of interesting people and love long, pedantic descriptions of buildings.

VHS : Ken Burns Presents The West (Boxed Set)
When some people use the word "documentary" they seem to imbue it with an expectation of total objectivity--as if one could eliminate all traces of cultural experience from one's makeup and discover a shining path of ultimate "truth" simply by the act of becoming a filmmaker. Nonsense. We are all a product of our times and of the culture in which we were raised and educated. Documentaries are always, always, always selective. There is no such thing as total objectivity, either in writing or in filmmaking.

That said, this is an enormously valuable effort to sift through an extraordinary cross-section of materials and condense them into 12 and 1/2 hours of very viewable, enlightening and often extremely moving stories. Yes, that's right, I said "condense". The documents available on the history ... Read More

VHS : Not for Ourselves Alone - The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony
It would be totally inadequate for this reviewer to say that NOT FOR OURSELVES ALONE:The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony is simply a "must-see","well done","moving","dramatic","compelling"etc.etc. documentary of the two forgers of the early Woman's Suffrage Movement. This Ken and Paul Burns treatise has been so carefully, sensitively and lovingly handled, crafted and assembled that I was moved to anger, incredulity, sympathy, action and finally to just good ol'tears!
NOT FOR OURSELVES ALONE tells in vivid detail, based upon the enormous source material and writings and correspondence of the two amazing women of the 19th -century,Cady Stanton and Anthony, who almost in a battle alone, fought tirelessly for the equality and dignity and rights of all women to receive and exercise their rights as they saw guaranteed ... VHS : Ken Burns' America - The Shakers
Ken Burns' film about the religious sect "The Shakers" is typical of the superior work he has done in making historical documentaries for PBS. The film is less than an hour in length so of course it is a fairly superficial look at this fascinating group and their contributions to American history. However Burns does delve at least somewhat in to the history and religious beliefs of this group that was originally called the Shaking Quakers and was founded in 18th century England by an illiterate woman known as Mother Ann. The church grew to have nineteen thriving "societies" in the United States that aside from their beautiful simple furniture developed high quality seeds, cattle breeds, brooms, architecture and many other perfectly designed products. As in most Burns documentaries quotes from journal entries and contemporary writers and observers ... Read More

VHS : Ken Burns's America - The Statue of Liberty
As much an exposition on liberty as it is the history of the statue, this is a thought-provoking film. It is an honest portrayal of the beautiful ideal of liberty, but also political challenges and problems associated with its application. To African-American James Baldwin, liberty is a bitter joke.

The statue was meant as a symbol of friendship between two republics, America and France, but the process of construction also demonstrates that the strain of dislike in the relationship has a long history. Bartholdi didn't even know if he liked Americans, apparently! But New York harbor offered an ideal place for his artistic ambition, statues on a giant scale.

The pedestal was an American creation, based on a classical Egyptian model.

I liked the old films of immigrants, and their jubilation at reaching the New World. ... Read More
