The film paints the story of two actors, from their first encounter at school in the Twenties through their success as stars of the Peking Opera, difficulties during the Japanese occupation, the Communist takeover in 1949 and the traumas of the Cultural Revolution in the Sixties...

For the so-called Fifth Generation of Chinese filmmakers, the film touches new ground on two fronts... The two friends, Xiaolou and Dieyi, adopt a young man, Xiao Si, who becomes one of the Red Guards and quickly informs the political sins of his benefactors...

Heather Graham was, as always, incredibly sexy in this film.

But alas, I agree with other reviewers who noted the plot here is rather thin. And the demands on the actors' talents are not very high.

And for me, the denouement left me unclear about just who had done just what, as explanation of the mysteries that develop in the course of the story. This in particular left me unsatisfied. (And the only possible explanations are not especially satisfying, even if I knew which is the right one, since they lack any trace of complexity.)

It's a nice song, though.

When you think of great Chinese films, you think of director Zhang Yimou, actress Gong Li and actor Leslie Cheung. Well Temptress Moon has two of the three, Gong and Cheung and fills in the third with Chen Kaige. Chen is a the director of Farewell, My Concubine. Like Zhang, Chen is a master of the visual sophistication. His use of color is exceptional.

VHS : Life on a String
Kaige's work with symbolism and emotion is superb.I initially saw this movie on VHS after reading Hoberman's review in the Village Voice. The pacing is fairly fast, given the length of the story, the activity moves right along. Those folks not use to movies outside the mainstream might feel ackward but give it a chance. At the same time Kino Video has done an atrocious job with the video transfer. The initial 10 minutes the frame shakes and jerks and I guarantee that's not from the original. The resolution is overly grainy, someone else needs to redo the remaster, because this awesome screen parable deserves it.
