VHS : Canterville Ghost (1944)
I saw this black & white movie Canterville Ghost(1944) years ago. The cowardly ghost was funny. I was excited to find it on Amazon. The ghost tries to scare the guest instead they scare the cowardly ghost. Once again I enjoyed watching it but it wasn't as funny as I remembered. I also purchased the newer version in color of Canterville Ghost(1986)staring John Gielgud, Ted Wass, Andrea Marcovicci, and Alyssa Milano. This Canterville ghost wants the new owners out and is very mischief. We enjoyed both movies.

VHS : Circle of Two (1980)
I got this movie in a 10 pack. This film pays for the whole thing! Burton is excellent! No over acting; very realistic. It may just be his best role! Tatum is very good. Young girls CAN be very smart. I love the line: robbing the cradle, robbing the grave (something like that). I like the realism of all the characters. Hey, it's an old guy's best daydream, like me. Let's see, he was 60; she was almost 16. I am 63, so maybe I have a chance at a 19 year old? But I am not a famous artist, and I don't look like Burton. Back to the movie. It starts out kinda slow--but with some nice dialogue--and gets more interesting towards the end. I really think they could have gotten away with a full nude Tatum, instead of hiding her lower part behind the chair. It would have not offended anyone and made it more ... Read More

3.The Naked City starring: Barry Fitzgerald, Howard Duff, Dorothy Hart, Don Taylor, Frank Conroy

VHS : The Naked City
Shot entirely on location in 1940s Manhattan, this semi-documentary police procedural offers a day-to-day look at the life of the Big Apple, its varied denizens, and the routine of two cops--old hand Fitzgerald (who quietly steals the film) and the dutiful but still green Taylor--out to catch a killer. Dassin handles the action with matter-of-fact directness, and soon fast-talking Frank Niles (Howard Duff) has raised their interest. But the great achievement of "City" is its verisimilitude of character and place, and a final chase scene on the Williamsburg Bridge that will steal your breath away. There might be "8 million stories in the naked city," but this sinister crime drama was the first--and still the best. Trivia note:this film was said to have inspired "Dragnet".

I don't want to reveal any "spoilers" about the film, but I do want to make a few clairifications about the previous reviews. This film (which is one of the most powerfrul, emotional movies I've ever seen--notwithstanding I've been in mad crazy love with Melina Mercouri ever since I saw Never on Sunday) is about an actress whose career is in decline (Mercouri), who is doing a film adaption of the play Medea. A publicist discovers that in a local greek jail is an American woman (Burstyn), who murdered her children. "Dream" does a wonderful job of interspersing the Medea plot without beating the viewer over the head about it. Ms. Burstyn's character moves to Greece, doesn't speak the language, doesn't make any friends, becomes lonely and isolated, deeply unhappy. Then the husband sleeps around, and Ms. ... Read More

NIGHT AND THE CITY...RIGHT?
almost like macbeth in nature, richard widmark makes choices in his life that can ultimately lead to only one conclusion...along the way are a loyal but weary girlfriend, shady husband and wife business partners, and a professional wrestler living glory days past his prime...standing in widmark's path to riches is the underworld organization....but it's the war torn city of london at night that takes center stage in dassin's shakespearean-like tragedy, which is certainly one of the best film noir's ever made.
(want to save yourself 20-30 bucks..buy the OOP factory original 20th century fox vhs instead of the criterion dvd...the videotape is clear, complete, and captioned.)

VHS : Topkapi
Topkapi is the former harem of the Sultan of Turkey in Istanbul. There is a museum that contains rich jewels and many armed guards to protect the treasures. "Elizabeth Lipp" introduces us to the museum. Walter Harper agrees to steal the emerald encrusted dagger but will use amateurs who don't have records that will make them suspects to the police. An expert tells how a strain gauge can detect any solid body on the floor. But there is a way to defeat this. Next Elizabeth and Walter pay Arthur Simpson to drive a car across the border. What can be in that car? The secret police arrest Simpson and double him. [I didn't find it funny.] There are scenes of everyday life in Turkey. Next there are some comic scenes due to language difficulties.

Sightseeing shows more scenes of everyday life. The secret police ... Read More

VHS : Brute Force (1947)
I've been anxious to broaden my film horizons with some classic pieces of American cinema. The results have been mixed. Some times I feel some of these "classics" are a bit of a bore. They might have some significant themes, but also have unrealistic plot developments, fanciful dialogue, and a severe case of overacting.
Thankfully that is not the case with Brute Force. This is just a gritty, intense prison-break movie. Like nearly all movies of this sort, you have the evil Captain abusing the inmates(and somehow these criminals usually come off as decent guys victimized by bad luck). These men get fed up with these unconscionable atrocities and hatch an ingenious escape plan.
Now, there are some extremely violent scenes which somehow caught me by suprise(duh Chris, the title is Brute Force). I was really ... Read More

VHS : Where the Hot Wind Blows
THE LAW/WHERE THE HOT WIND BLOWS shows Gina Lollobrigida at 31, in top form both as a beautiful woman and as an actress. God, how gorgeous she was, and how hot, sensual, desirable is her Marietta! No wonder every man in town lusts after her! The whole cast is wonderful: Mastroianni, Mercouri, Montand, Stoppa and the great Pierre Brasseur. Jules Dassin's direction does justice to the Vailland novel, for the most part. It is urgent to restore this film and release it in DVD format with extras, including a competent critical commentary.
