VHS : Streets of Laredo
A long way from the Hollywoodised version of a Lonesome Dove sequel seen in `Return from Lonesome Dove', this is Larry McMurty's riposte to the way the Studio handled that sequel. Where `Return..' dealt with the cattle barons and themes of redemption and wholesome endings, this is a stark and realistic portrayal of the West. Here, the violent men of the burgeoning West are a dying breed (no pun intended) and that sense of a time in history passing is present throughout the whole movie.
Captain Call is now a bounty hunter - past his best, failing eyesight and getting old, but still with his own inherent sense of what's right intact. The movie is a manhunt, for a young Mexican killer - a boy from a good family who was captured by the Apache and was bad ever since. For the trip, Call ... Read More

VHS : Playing for Time
I read about this film in Vanessa Redgrave's fascinating biography (which I highly recommend). Her performance in this role is stunning, and as always with truly great art, the script, the directing, and the acting never get sentimental. This is a realistic look at the confusion, disorientation, and tough choices that take place when human beings find themselves in horrific situations outside of their control, yet despite these conditions, the film leaves us a glimmer of hope by showing that even in the worst times human beings can still retain their humanity.

It is a shame that this film is not on DVD. It should be watched, re-watched, and studied. The acting is brilliant, the script realistic and masterful, and the acting sublime.

Sarah Wheaton (Glenn Close) is a mail-order bride in 1910 who answers an ad for a "wife" to "make a difference" in a families life. She moves from Maine to Kansas (a long train ride). The man she answers to is Jacob Witting (Christopher Walken). He and his 2 kids (Anna and Caleb) are still mourning the death of his wife, Katherine, after 6 years. She writes to them many times before deciding to do a 30 day trial in which she lives with the family to see how things work out. They go through many hardships before everything turns out ok in the end. Then, in the sequel, their prarie is threatened by a drought. Jacob keeps on insisting that she (Sarah), Anna, and Jacob leave so that their lives aren't in danger. Sarah doesn't want to leave her husband on the prarie alone because of fear for his life. Jacob ... Read More

No one really survives the Holocaust;in some way or another a person, nomatter how they escaped that onslaught are altered forever in their relationships to themselves and others;that is the central theme of this 1992 EMMY AWARD WINNER for outstanding movie of the year.A young Kyra Sedgwick is shown to already be the fine actress that fifteen years later will earn her GOLDEN GLOBES.The story is definitely light fare as far as Holocaust related movies go.Good companion films to MISS ROSE WHITE would be A CALL TO REMEMBER and AN AMERICAN RHAPSODY which both explore the post-war dilemna of family and assimilation. For a foreign film that is similar I suggest MENDEL (Norway).

VHS : Manions of America
This is the story of Rory O'Manion (Pierce Brosnan) from young adult hood and his fight against the oppressive English in Ireland. From the potato famine and loss of his mother, to his love for the English landlord's daughter Rachel (Kate Mulgrew: of Star Trek Voyager),and subsequent flight to the shores of America. From poor to rich in America, but still longing for the freedom for his beloved Ireland. Also starring Linda Purl (The Exorcist), Nicholas Hammond (Sound of Music, Spiderman), David Soul (Starsky & Hutch), and Simon MacCorkindale. Very moving, interesting to watch Pierce Brosnan in the early days of his career.

VHS : Tribes
Tribes is certainly a period piece of 1970 with a strong liberal anti-establishment point of view. Today it seems dated and blase`, yet it still has a magnetic attraction to viewers whether veterans, active duty military, or civilians.

From a technical standpoint, there were some flaws (which seems inevitable in any hollywood production dealing with the military) and many ommissions about USMC boot camp (what happened to the long humps with helmet, flak jacket and packs, field exercises, bivuacking, etc?), but overall they got the flavor of boot camp correct. As a former US Marine Commissioned Officer, I never attended MCRD San Diego (I attended OCS Quantico, VA), but as an airline pilot I have flown into Lindbergh Field, San Diego, CA on many occasions and have seen the grinder, PT fields, ... If you are looking for a wholesome film that is well acted with a storyline that is original and captivating, this is the film for you and your family. Set in historic America, it admirably portrays the upright pioneering values of God-fearing, hard-working American immigrants. The complex three dimensionality of the characters creates a chemistry rarely seen in good story-telling movies. Don't miss this one, the kids and you will love it.

I am a big fan of the Jaws series. Wasn't too fond of Jaws 3. Loved the first 2 and then it came down to this one. Did I like it? Of course I did. I don't go and question how a great white shark got into the Bahamas waters or anything like that. I just enjoyed the movie for what it was worth.
