VHS : Act of Vengeance
Charles Bronson, mired in awful B action flicks in the 1980's, decided to take this made-for-HBO flick to stretch his acting chops. He should have just made another "Death Wish" movie, instead.

Based on a true story set in 1969, Bronson plays United Mine Workers union official Jock Yablonski. He cowtows to union president Tony Boyle (Wilford Brimley), who is made out to be a ruthless crook immediately. As Jock and his wife Margaret (Ellen Burstyn) coast through life, a mine accident claims the lives of eighty people. Boyle arrives in the grieving West Virginia town and defends the coal company over the miners.

Yablonski is almost run out of town, and decides he has had enough. He announces his candidacy for the union presidency, and begins campaigning. Boyle then orders ... Read More

VHS : Long Good Friday
The Long Good Friday, considered one of the best British gangster flicks, takes the classic story of hubristic downfall and sets it in late-seventies London. Bob Hoskins plays Harold Shand, a gangland kingpin trying to "go legit" by investing in some shorefront property which will one day host the Olympics. After a trip across the Atlantic to meet with his American gangster counterparts, he brings them back to East London where he hopes to convince them to invest with him in the shorefront property.

That's when things go wrong: his henchmen start dying and his local haunts get blown up, raising doubt in the Americans about the security of their potential investment. Harold Shand, in an interesting twist, turns from gangster to detective, and ruthlessly investigates all his known associates. ... Read More

VHS : When the Sky Falls
25 minutes into this film I began to wonder why I was watching this film. Like many here, I had seen the film "Veronica Guerin" & chose to view "When the Sky Falls" so as to compare the two. The reason that there are two versions is that the latter film (finally made in 2000) got the go ahead while the real-life journalist Veronica Guerin was still alive; with her permission under the proviso that all names would be changed and that her story would be fictionalized to a certain extent as well. That the real Veronica Guerin was murdered in the interm doesn't seem to have changed anything regarding "When the Sky Falls." The film "Veronica Guerin," in contradistinction, is more a biopic done wth panache; a captivating biopic of this woman's exploits in exposing the criminal underworld in Dublin. It thus has ecclipsed ... Read More

VHS : Beyond the Limit
Anglo-Paraguyan doctor Eduardo Plarr (Gere) moves into Corrientes, meets the honorary British Consul, Charlie Fortnum (Caine), an incorrigable drunk. Fortnum and the local chief of police, Colonel Perez (Hoskins), introduce him to the realities of life in the border town, which is under military occupation due to the high incidence of Paraguayan terrorism in the area. Eduardo starts having a passionless affair with Fortnum's 19 year old ex-prostitute wife and gets involved with terrorists who kidnap Charlie instead of the American Ambassador. It ends badly.

Despite the excellent cast, the performances in this film are disappointing across the board: Gere's trying to hard, Caine's trying only as hard as he has to and the usually reliable Hoskins has a worse Spanish accent than Gere's English one. The characters are one ... Read More

I just seen the movie in Max Prime, and I sure can relate to the reviewers who said that the choise of actor and weakness in the plot make this unbelievable- but lets focus on substance! neo-nazis have taken over, be it white supremacist in the US (from KK to who knows what), actual neo-puristanist at the white house or the fact that Germany is reacting to its loss at II WW.. to make matter worst, we have the perfect excuse of the terrorist act of 09/11 enforced by a patriot Act that places all powers to judicial prosecutors of whatever they consider un-patriotic..

The whole concep of a free society has been loss and we are criticizing a movie for its weak choosing of the main actor??? Am I the only one smelling the coffee??

Ok, I can hear the white supremacist saying that such films can exists because of the ... Read More
