I really enjoyed the film, though having not read the book feel unqualified to make comments about the screenplay. But as a professional musician I feel that I must comment on the music by Raksin which is the finest example of original romantic film scoring I have ever heard, helped by some sublime string playing. The violin and cello solos are heartbreakingly beautiful. Surely it's worth seeing the film for the music alone.

We loved it and laughed all the way through it. I hope a real coach
doesn't have to go through all the antics that Fred MacMurray went
through. You have to like Fred MacMurray to really appreciate
this movie. I guess what made us laugh most were the teens. Our
daughter was the same way. I wasn't sure either of us would live
through those times.

Ellen (Gene Tierney) is a beautiful, intelligent young woman. She is outwardly perfect in every regard. Unfortunately, she is lacking some things internally. Ellen has no conscience. She also lacks compassion, empathy, and a few other human qualities. Ellen lives only to please herself, by any means necessary. Along comes a handsome, successful writer (Cornel Wilde) who catches Ellen's eye. She wants him, but wait, she's already engaged to be married to another man (Vincent Price). No problem! In Ellen's mind, all she needs to do is remove her engagement ring and move on. She'll marry the writer now. This comes as quite a shock to both men involved. This is just the way Ellen thinks and lives her life. No one else matters. They are all mere pawns to help her get her own satisfaction. Sometimes these ... Read More

Gregory Peck, the supposedly inept priest becomes the kindly Christ-like spiritual shepherd to a group of Chinese peasants and is finally recognized for what he is in the last reel. It's a familiar formula, one Ingrid Bergman did with a larger screen, and color to boot, in "Inn of the Sixth Happiness." They are wholesome, they are touching, they even bring a tear to the eye. But unfortunately they are so predictable. Hollywood has always gone for the wholesome and the touching and the spiritually uplifting, knowing perhaps that audiences wouldn't buy any other product. I, for one, would like to see a little more tension in the story, a little more ambiguity, a priest who isn't quite so sure of himself, a congregation that maintains a healthy skepticism about its shepherd, even as it hungers for ... VHS : Immortal Sergeant
An early Fonda Film set in North Africa during WWII. Hank plays one of several
British Tommys fighting the nasty nazis. It is an interesting mixture of
blatent flag waiving (that is not a bad thing) typical B grade propaganda
effort (that is a bad thing) and Mr. Fonda trying hard but not quite succeding, to
put fortha performance the equal of his co-stars. I liked the film mainly because
it is a classic example of WWII propaganda. Could have taken place in the American
South West in the 1870's with Fonda fighting the Apaches over a water hole.
If you have little expectation of an Oscar Winning effort you will not be disapointed.
But it is worth the watch. WH

So, I'm reading these reviews, and it seems that a lot of people like to talk about things that they DO NOT know about. First, I would like to say that this is a good movie. It would never be one of my favorites, but it definitely was well made. So now that that's out of the way....I would never say that the character of Delilah is "understandable for those times" as if her portrayal was realistic. However, her portrayal as a "mammy" is understandable because most portrayals of African Americans in early film had to do with the five basic character types(mammy, tom, coon, buck, and mulatto). Realistically, if you were living through the Great Depression would you give complete ownership of a recipe to someone else who will make millions off of it? I just think it's funny that people find Delilah to be a believeable ... Read More

VHS : Letter of Introduction
Letter of Introduction is a comedy drama with a great cast. Adolphe Menjou (A Star is Born, Pollyanna) plays John Manning, a movie star past his prime. When his now grown daughter Katy Martin (Andrea Leeds), whom he hasn't met since she was a child, shows up with a letter of introduction a few months after her mother's death, they agree to keep their relationship secret, partly because she wants to prove she can become a successful actress on her own, but primarily to protect his reputation. Unfortunately his fiancee (Ann Sheridan (Good Sam, King's Row)) and Katy's friends all misunderstand their relationship, a situation fully exploited for dramatic as well as comedic effect. Katy's romantic interest is played by George Murphy, a popular lead player in his time, appearing with Rondald Reagan in This Is The Army, ... Read More
