VHS : A Wrinkle in Time
I was a HUGE fan of the novel as a child, and was very excited when I discovered that they made a movie version of it. I quickly ordered the DVD and even had it rushed to me. I watched it as soon as I got the DVD, but I was a bit disappointed. Perhaps if I had not read the book, I would have thought the movie was better than it was, but that was not the case. It was tragic to see what they had done to Mrs. Who, my favorite character of the novel. In the novel she was constantly quoting people, and in various languages, but in the movie was an afterthought and just seemed odd. The Happy Medium seemed like a characture of a homosexual male and not the ambiguous being that it was in the novel. I felt that they could have done a great deal more with the over 2 hours they had in the movie. I could list ... Read More

VHS : A House Divided
Talk about living history... I've read all the books about this family and I live in the house David built for his daughter Amanda in 1871. I can look out my window and see the spot where David's childhood home once stood. I even met Jennifer Beals when she came to see the house and the land. Although not filmed here, the movie was great - although it did take a little dramatic license. It was known Julia held a very high position of authority, very rare for a woman, much less a black slave woman. It was also apparent David felt much love for his bi-racial daughter Amanda. Only two people know the truth of nature of the relationship between David and Julia that brought Amanda into existence, if indeed David was the father. (He was married for several years and never produced children.) If you're into ... Read More

VHS : Johnny's Girl
Another of those well-made small Canadian films that nobody has seen. Where the technical production and the performances transform a weak adaptation into a nice little feature.

"Johnny's Girl" is amazingly like Allen Moyle's 1999 masterpiece "New Waterford Girl"; both in subject and in style. Each involve the new girl in Canadian/Alaskan towns where the theme song is The Animal's "We Got To Get Out of This Place". In "Johnny's Girl", set in the late 1960's, the new arrival (Mia Kirshner) leaves her divorced mother in a mental hospital and comes to the new town to live with her father (Treat Williams). As in "New Waterford Girl" the heroine spends the movie talking about getting out of the little town and heading for the big city, then has second thoughts when given the opportunity.

VHS : Beautiful Dreamers
Who, apart from some psychologists and health care providers even know who Richard Maurice Bucke is????

Well, thank God that there are some film directors that eschew big time glitz to bring a work of pure art and labour of love to the screen. BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS is the based-on-fact story of Maurice Bucke, whose enduring friendship with famed poet Walt Whitman influenced him greatly in the field of progressive health care. Bucke believed that humane contact and a normalization of routines in mental asylums was absolutely necessary to the rehabilitation and care of the unfortunate.Bucke is often recognized as "the father of occupational therapy". Bucke was an avid reader of poetry and read Whitman's banned (in Canada) LEAVES OF GRASS which lead him to meeting the famed American poet in 1877. ... Read More

VHS : Hole in the Sky
This is a great movie with a lot of truth to the story.

I just viewed "Hole In The Sky" again, checking closely for inconsistencies and inaccuracies.

I spent many summers as a youth and young man camping and working in the Elk Summit country where much of the depicted action takes place. It's a shame that the producers did not shoot on the actual location, because in my view it is more beautiful and represents reality much better than the British Columbia location they used. Their choice serves well for people who don't care about the real place, but for me, a person who loves the place, maybe it's just as well. I wouldn't want to see a horde of admirers trouping up there.

Bill Bell, Sam Elliot's character, was a real person who really worked out of the Elk Summit country. ... Read More
