I find it really a disgrace that it isn't available on DVD region 1 along with the making of documentary. The first time I saw it, I found it to be amazing and beautiful.Although it is slow moving, it is really worth the effort to sit thru it and enjoy. There are some departures from the novella, but they only enhance the film. I recommend reading the short story after the movie like I did.

I first saw this movie in 1958 just before going to Japan with the US Army. It made quite an impact on me and my expectations of the Japanese. The movie does successfully capture some of the Japanese spirit as I know it. John Wayne, though he has been panned in this role, I think, embodies what may have been an accurate portrayal of the typical well meaning American in a culture he could never understand. Years later, when I happened to be in Shimoda, where the film is set, I found a small Japanese Museum, that commorated the self-sacrifice of the Japanese woman, the lovely Okichi, to her community. It depicts the 'facts' of the movie in a totally differnt light.
This movie really deserves to be put on DVD !!

5.Annie starring: Aileen Quinn, Albert Finney, Carol Burnett, Ann Reinking, Tim Curry

VHS : Annie
This DVD of "Annie" is the full-screen version, wherein 40% of the picture has been chopped off the sides. It is virtually unwatchable, and Sony should be ashamed for releasing a widescreen/scope film in this way.

Sony has previously released the widescreen version of the film on DVD, but without the special features or DTS sound, so it might be best to wait for a future release that presents the film properly and has the bonus features. Or wait for the inevitable Blu-ray release which should be really nice.

6.Casino Royale starring: Woody Allen, Ursula Andress, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Barbara Bouchet, Charles Boyer

VHS : Casino Royale
"Casino Royale" from the '60s bears little resemblance to the sexy 007 movie that was released recently with the hot Daniel Craig. It's quite psychedelic, with its vast cast ranging from the comedian Woody Allen to the famous Bond girl Ursula Andress. The visuals (for its time) are stunningly psychedelic. Despite its "international cast",it's confusing, unfunny, and unwatchable. When Samuel L. Jackson ordered a "Royale with cheese" in "Pulp Fiction",he may well have been referencing this cheesy, campy, out there film.

"Casino Royale" has more than one James Bond, some of whom are women (gender confusion! how timely!) David Niven is an uptight English lord, while Woody Allen is a nebbish. There are numerous renowned sirens of the '60s,but their sex appeal doesn't add any spice to this strangely bland "thriller." ... Read More

Aaaahhh ... Bogey. AFI's No. 1 film star of the 20th century. Hollywood's original noir anti-hero, epitome of the handsome, cynical and oh-so lonesome wolf; looking unbeatably cool in his fedora, a cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth. Endowed with a legendary aura several times larger than his real life stature, and still admired by scores of women wishing they had been born 50+ years earlier, preferably somewhere in California and to parents connected with the movie business, so as to have at least a marginal chance of meeting him.

"Key Largo" (1948), directed by John Huston, is the last of four movies starring Bogart and real-life spouse Lauren Bacall (after their legendary collaborations in, first and foremost, "To Have and Have Not" and "The Big Sleep," as well as in "Dark Passage"), by this time ... Read More

VHS : Heaven Knows Mr Allison
African Queen is one of my favorite movies ever, and Bogie and Hepburn as Charlie and Rosie were the best film couple ever. Here, Huston adapts the Allnut story to a Robinson Crusoe set up in WW2 in the South Pacific. Kerr can't quite carry Sister Angela to the level of Hepburn's Rosie; I mean, she does ok, but she was not in the same league as Hepburn.
A Marine corporal, played as a nice, naive and brave simpleton by a mostly sober Mitchum, and a nun are stranded on an island 300 km N of Fiji during WW2. They got there separately, but now they are stuck together. While they get to know each other, and before they have time to try their project for escape by boat to Fiji, the Japanese come and occupy the island. They hide in a cave. The Japanese leave. They come out. They hope for US troups to come next, but the Japanese return. ... Read More

VHS : Moby Dick
Released in '56, `Moby Dick' is one of the film classics of the fifties. Surprisingly the film quality is rather drab at times with the appearance of old newsreel footage. This is generally the case with the shots aboard the Pequot showing billowing sails or the ship from a distance. Yet at other times it's quite artistic and mesmerizing such as; the close-up portrait cameos of the old women standing on the dock, or the brooding sermon delivered by Orson Welles at the beginning.

However there are two things that raise this film to a higher, mythic level. Those two things are the magnificent performance by Gregory Peck as Captain Ahab and of course the white whale. Peck delivers a signature performance as the obsessive and defiant sea captain willing to forfeit not only his life but his soul for one more opportunity to slay the ... Read More
