VHS : They Live
This delightfully eerie movie demonstrates that great films are not necessarily pretentious; world-class art can appeal to regular folks; you needn't read John Taylor Gatto to lean the truth about 'Education;" and although you could study "alternative economic history" for months on end at the Yamaguchy website, Mary E. Hobart and David Astle aren't the only reality gurus who can clue you in to what's really going down here on the third stone from the sun. Not at all! John Carpenter manages to do just that in his 95 minute "B-Movie" masterpiece, 'They Live!"

So read the other reviews, form your own opinions, but by all means be sure to see "They Live." And if you are an "art snob" or one of those people who seek cultural justification for pursuing the enjoyable, then consider that ... Read More

VHS : Vampires (1998)
This is a great vampire movie with a good balance of suspense and blood. Some stories in the genre are too heavy on the character's personal stories and light on the gore, or vice versa, but not this well written horror. James Woods is a 'suave' and savvy vampire killer who lets his guard down with the most ruthless head vampire he's ever encountered. He finds out too late he's been double crossed...the blood suckers knew he was coming...but who is the traitor amongst the day walkers and why? Worthy of a space on my 'favorite horror' flicks shelf.

VHS : Christine
She can't (and won't) drive 55.... Stephen King's novel about the twisted love affair between a boy and his car gets transferred to the screen, courtesy of suspense master John Carpenter. Although lacking some of the more outré supernatural elements of the source material, this high-octane cinematic tune-up more than delivers the goods, horror-wise (Christine's midnight rampages will never be forgotten)--as well as being a sly exposé of the random cruelties within the high-school pecking order. Keith Gordon (who has gone on to become a stellar director in his own right, with films such as A Midnight Clear and Mother Night to his credit) gives a wonderfully controlled central performance.

Keith Gordon makes the most of the lead role as the nerdy Arnie who quickly becomes the disturbed owner of "Christine". ... Read More

6.Escape From La starring: Kurt Russell, Steve Buscemi, Stacy Keach, A.J. Langer, Georges Corraface
directed by: John Carpenter
August 05, 1997
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Escape From La
This movie follows Escape from New York, and it's just great. It's not meant to be taken too seriously. There are subtle jokes throughout the movie. A lot of it is tongue in cheek. So enjoy it for what it is. My favorite line is "This is LA, and this ****ing city can kill anyone!" There will be no Oscars, no awards given out for this movie... it's just mindless entertainment. You can tell Kurt Russell is having fun with the character. The whole movie is "over the top" and that's the point. Loads of fun, provided you don't take the movie, or yourself, too seriously. So lighten up, sit back, and enjoy!

An old classic now better than ever. I bought as a gift for my son.

8.In the Mouth of Madness starring: Sam Neill, Jürgen Prochnow, Julie Carmen, David Warner, John Glover

VHS : In the Mouth of Madness
Before the review begins, it needs to be said that John Carpenter is my favorite director. With that out of the way, In the Mouth of Madness is a good movie that was unfortunately marred by some bad acting and a poor script. Sam Neil did a superb job, but everyone else was somewhat of a let down from my point of view, especially Jurgen Prochnow's role as Sutter Cane. Nevertheless, In the Mouth of Madness is probably Carpenter's last worthwhile directorial effort before slipping into obscurity.

VHS : Prince of Darkness
With 101 reviews to-date, there's not much to add, so I'll briefly explain the one-star rating: 1) Cliches abound - naturally, people pair off or stray from the others, the easier to be killed; 2) Boring - because zombies move slowly, so does the action, the biggest sin in a horror film; 3) Inconsistent - how do you kill a zombie? This film fails to answer the question; in one scene, a zombie is decapitated (the usual way to dispatch a zombie) but he promptly puts his own head back on and continues his rampage, while another zombie is tossed from a second-story window and dies immediately...huh? 3) Ridiculous - a church in an urban setting along a main road is the scene of a two-day siege by a zombie army, surrounded by street zombies (led by Alice Cooper) who ring the building and stand transfixed, preventing no one from leaving...and nobody calls the authorities? ... 10.Big Trouble in Little China starring: Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun, James Hong, Victor Wong
directed by: John Carpenter
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
VHS : Big Trouble in Little China
Big Trouble in Little China is a cult classic. Like most cult classics (Raising Arizona, Robocop, Matrix, Dumb and Dumber, etc.) you're either going to "get" this movie or you won't. The FX in this movie can be cheesy - they didn't have a huge budget. But what works fantastically with the script is the off the wall fusion of red neck machismo and Kung Fu mysticism. Kurt Russell gives a memorable performance as the fearless and not so bright hero of the story, all the while doing this lame John Wayne imitation that somehow manages to work for him. Leading his band of misfits, they take on the dark forces forces of ancient China. Will you enjoy it? Who knows. But if you like Kung-Fu and slapstick humor, you've got to give this a chance. It's looking a little dated these days, but most of it still works just fine.
