VHS : Christmas Carol - The Movie
Being 22, I grew up knowing the story of the Christmas Carol in movies and theatrical shows. I tend to think that the one I saw most - the 1992 release - as being my favorite, but I happened upon this version during a cable TV special. I first thought, Oh geez another animated project...but I was surprised by the sheer depth, character and beautiful animation of this movie. The actors who voice the characters are brilliant (and Kate Winslet gives a stellar performance on the theme song, "What If") and the mice bring much needed fun to a rather serious kind of story; the animation is interesting (especially during the Ghost of Present scenes with the swirling colors and images intermixed with the gorgeous music), although a bit old in comparison to today's standards it is still a nice combination ... VHS : Humanoids From Deep
Noticeably taking several cues from big budget horror films, Humanoids from the Deep still manages to create an enjoyable atmosphere and a few unique thrills to retain an air of originality. Combining an infinitely absurd plot with serious actors, decent gore effects, gratuitous nudity, and a pervasive foreboding score from James Horner culminates in a low budget horror flick that nearly breaks free of such impediments to offer plenty of scares and laughs, mostly in that order.

In this Roger Corman produced monster movie, a small coastal village finds themselves facing a deadly invasion when DNA testing on local sea life causes mutated amphibious monstrosities to rise from the waters and begin preying on the villagers - and attempting to mate with human women.

VHS : Battle Beyond the Stars
BBTS was one of the many films that tried to capitalize on the Star Wars craze of the late '70s and early '80s. Unlike most of those films, this one actually succeeds pretty well.

The legendary Roger Corman was responsible for this film. That fact, in and of itself, is probably why this "poor man's Star Wars" deserves a look.

The special effects (for their time) were actually quite good. They were not of Star Wars caliber, but they were much better than other sci-fi films of the time.

The story is one we're all familiar with (a la The Magnifient Seven). Poor old planet Akir is being picked on by intergalactic baddie, Sador (sound almost like Vader, doesn't it?). The young and naive boy (a la Luke Skywalker) has to leave his home for the first time on an intergalactic ... Read More

In a word, disappointing. Maybe I didn't read close enough, but I thought I was getting something that resembled Roger Waters. If that's what you are looking for, you should seriously consider buying something else.

Zondervan's Story Keepers series is a fun way for children to learn the Gospel. Written from a broadly Christian perspective, these cartoons are ecumenically-minded and can be enjoyed by Catholics and Protestants alike. My children especially like the Easter video.

By the way, since the stories are set in the Apostolic era, it would have been impossible for the Story Keepers to "repeat the Bible"--it hadn't been written and canonized yet!

What the stories do convey, perhaps unintentionally, is the pedigree of the oral Tradition, as the Gospel was "handed-on" (the literal meaning of the word "Tradition") for decades before being written down.
