VHS : Show Boat (1936)
This is an out-and-out classic that should be permanently available on DVD. So where is it? Surely, MGM must know the value of their product, and this one is worth its weight in gold-dust - the entire cast is superb (other reviewers have named them all, so I wont repeat them), it's in beautiful black-and-white, it gives a much fuller version of the score than the lame 50's remake, and it's much better sung, plus it's got period charm by the bucketful. Yet every time I do a search, all I can come up with is Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson. Please!!!!!

VHS : Frankenstein
Given that I already own The Monster Legacy Collection (Frankenstein / Dracula / The Wolf Man) (busts and all), I hemmed, hawed, and read other reviews prior to purchasing the 75th Anniversary Edition. However, an Amazon seller listed an offer I couldn't refuse, so I bit and, all things considered, have no cause for regrets.
The Good: First, the print looks and sounds better than the previous releases. Nice and clean with deep blacks, good contrast, and very little damage, the video is solid and a pleasure to watch. However, I'm especially appreciative of the audio remastering--it sounds terrific for the first time (at least in my opinion).
A treasure trove of juicy extras are included, the jewel in the crown being Kevin Brownlow's Universal Horror, which I've caught on TCM. Also to be ... Read More

VHS : The Bride of Frankenstein
I JUST WATCHED "THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN" FOR THE FIRST TIME (73 YEARS AFTER ITS MAKING). WHILE MOVIE MAKING HAS OBVIOUSLY TRAVELED LIGHT YEARS FROM THE TECHNIQUES USED IS THIS FILM, IT IS STILL A TRUE CLASSIC IN HORROR FILMDOM.
ASIDE FROM JUST A FEW OUT OF FOCUS SHOTS LEFT IN THE FILM, SUCH AS THE TOUCHING OF HANDS IN THE "REBUFFED" SCENE, THIS IS STILL A CREEPY AND RATHER SCARY FILM THAT IS TRULY TIMELESS.
IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO SEE A LITTLE MORE OF THE BRIDE..BUT MAYBE THE BEST WAS TRULY SAVED FOR THE END THIS TIME.
I COULDN'T HELP BUT FEEL SORRY FOR THE BIG FELLA AS HE TRIED AND TRIED TO BEFRIEND MANY HE CAME INTO CONTACT WITH...BUT WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF A 7 FOOT SQUARE HEADED MAN-CREATURE HAPPENED UPON YOU?
THIS IS A GREAT FILM. I WOULD PAY TO SEE THIS MOVIE ON THE BIG SCREEN. ... Read More

VHS : The Invisible Man
If you are on this page, you probably already know that this movie is based on H.G. Welles's book "The Invisible Man." I did enjoy the book, but I found I actually liked the movie better. (Undoubtedly because of Claude Rains's phenomenal acting. (All the more kudos to him, since he had to perform the part with just his voice at his disposal!) His character Jack Griffin (already invisible, but disguised with a coat, hat, and other clothes that make him appear visible) comes to a small out of way town. He causes some stir in this clannish town, but for the most part, they seem to have the decency to treat him with the same courtesy they might give a local. With tensions released for a moment, we meet the other central characters including his former friend Kemp, his former boss Dr. Cranmy, and his former potential wife Flora. ... Read More

VHS : Man in the Iron Mask
This was a great 30's period piece covering the court intrigues surrounding an unknown twin of the King of France. Phillipe of Gascony, a kindhearted man doesn't know that he was born a brother to the tyrannical King Louis (Louis Heyward doing double time). Raised by the now aging D'artagnan and the Three Musketeers (with Alan Hale as Porthos), Gascony is discovered by The Crown and brought to the Palace. Louis tests his twin and finds him an able substitute - too able in fact. He charms the people and even the royal fiancee, the Infanta of Spain (Joan Bennett) whom Louis can't stand. Happy to tax the people into penury, and distrustful of his brother, Louis tries to rid himself of noble Phillip. Because Phillip is technically of royal blood, Louis decides to forego an execution, instead consigning Phillip to the dreaded Bastille, ... Read More

VHS : Old Dark House
The Old Dark House for me is a tough review to write; while I enjoyed the movie I can't fully explain what it is I loved about this movie. While often lumped into the horror genre, The Old Dark House is actually an offbeat comedy with some touches of horror, but even the suspense scenes are often played with a bit of dark humor.

Several people are forced to take shelter in an old house during a severe rain storm with a creepy family and mute butler (played by Boris Karloff). All the elements for a horror classic are here, but instead it's more laughs than anything else. The Old Dark House is quite a strange little movie and even after all these years it still remains a very strange movie.

The screenplay written by Benn W. Levy was highly enjoyable and well written. While not the greatest script it serves its purpose and works quite ... Read More
