VHS : Surviving Picasso
I have looked for this movie for years to come on DVD...but alas it hasn't happened yet. This movie, which is based on a book, truly shows what it was like to have to live (or 'survive' as you will) with someone who is egocentric and artistic. I don't understand why people wanted this movie to explain Picasso as a person...the title tell you its about someone who SURVIVED Picasso. This man didn't want to be understood. He didn't care about that so appreciate this movie for what it is, a great example of how someone can almost be 'swallowed' whole by another larger than life figure but who is able to transcend all that and stand on their own in the end. This movie has so many great aspects to it outside of the acting so I urge people to give this movie a chance because it is a fantastic journey ... Read More

VHS : Remains of the Day
The beauty of Remains of the Day can not be overstated. The photography and art direction were superb in every way. The camera is usually at eye level in most shots, giving the film some intimacy within a great beautiful country home.

The film is based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, a talented master of the understated and unsaid. Anthony Hopkins plays his best role in this film because so much of the acting depends on what is controlled and not said, yet conveyed through subtle movements of the eye or shoulders or head. Hopkins plays Mr. Stevens, the head butler of a large wealthy country estate in rural England. He is the model of organization and forethought. Yet in this job he is so focused on this duty that he ignores the forces around him that call him into participation in the human experience. ... Read More

VHS : Howard's End
A magnificently told tale of sin, forgiveness, redemption, and the settling of accounts

Though slow-moving throughout (my only complaint against this film, and a minor one at that), HOWARD'S END is many things: a costume drama, a period piece, a film with some of the best acting you could ever hope to find, and at times, a comedy of errors with some very unique and unpredictable plot twists. The story revolves around two families -- the Schlegels and the Wilcoxes -- and a marriage which almost connects them, a close friendship that does, a failed bequest, a sin which comes back to haunt, another marriage, and a murder.

I must confess I have not read the book, though I now want to. Many years ago, I watched THE REMAINS OF THE DAY, another popular Merchant-Ivory film (also starring Anthony Hopkins ... Read More

VHS : Mr & Mrs Bridge
It is just a wonderful movie that did not get any play in the theatre or anywhere else. I rented it for the first time because of the cast and loved it, that is why I have added it to my collection. If we all live long enough we will go through the same thing, it's also a different period of time, but I could relate since I was on the fringe of that generation and as I look at things now maybe it was not all that bad. We have lost such an icon in Paul Newman, but I am glad that his wife is still with us. That is another thing that makes this movie so wonderfu is that Joann Woodward stars in it as his wife. They are always great and wonderful together. I'm so glad to have been able to follow Mr. Newman's career, as I'm 70y/o and saw it from the beginning. It seems that we are so caught up in special effects that we have forgotten ... Read More

The movie follows the book. It is a great movie. I have looked at it

The Ivory-Merchant-Jhabvala team established a particular style in their film productions. This film and HEAT AND DUST are even more special because they are based on novels written by Jhabvala herself.

This was a little boring but maybe more accurate it talks more about him and his time in Paris. I was more concentrated on Sally Hemmings.

I have to agree with the negative reviewers here, I have not read the book but books are always better than movies period. I hate these english actors that are cast as Americans, Beckinsale and Bale are the two prime examples but there are many more.

The acting was universally bad here as well, Nolte seems very wooden in particular but Beckinsale is not far behind, the only decent acting was by Uma Thurman.

This felt like an incomplete study throughout, by far the worst MI movie I've seen. MI should stick with the English Victorian/Edwardian periods that is it's forte and leave everything else to those who would know better. I'm glad this was a rental for me, not worth more than that.
