VHS : Island of the Blue Dolphins
This is the story of Karana, a young Indian girl raised on an island off the coast of California. Supposedly it is based on a true story, and it tells of how she survived on her native island after all of her people were removed and her younger brother was killed. The reader never knows why Karana's people were removed from the island, which would have helped me understand the story a bit better.

While Scott O'Dell is a good storyteller, there are some gaps that I wished he had explained better. For instance, when the Aleuts first came to the island when Karana's father was still living, there seems to be no gap in communications. Somehow the Aleuts can communicate with the natives. When the white men come and cart off Karana's people there again is no communication gap. ... Read More

I read the book to my two children, age 11 yo son and 5 yo daughter. My son was excited to get the movie. However, when we watched it, my son was disappointed. He noted the drastic change in story line, the poor quality of the lighting/screen colors, and the poor acting. My son is an actor himself, but had never made such comments before and this was the first movie he had ever walked out on. On the other hand, my daughter loved it. I did not like the change in the storyline making the grandparents seem much stricter.

VHS : Dog of Flanders (1959)
It is a well-told story of Nello, a poor boy aspiring to be an artist, and Patrasche, a faithful dog who becomes a friend to him. Based on Ouida's 1872 novella, "A Dog of Flanders" is heart-warming family picture, in which good people (and a dog) get what they deserve and bad people get their due. It is also about a friendship between a poor boy and an ill-used dog, which is appealing to us even now.

As is often the case with film adaptations, the original story is considerably changed. The people of the village (near the 19th century Antwerp) are more compassionate to the lonely boy and his grandfather than those counterparts in Ouida's book. The changed conclusion (seen again in the 1999 adaptation, which is slightly more faithful to the original) will be satisfying to most viewers, but ... Read More

My Side of the Mountain is a wonderful book. It explores a boy's adventures in living off the land on his grandfather's old farmland in the Catskill Mountains. He befriends several forest critters and raises and trains a peregrine falcon while learning how to survive in nature.
That said, I looked forward to seeing the movie. Unfortunately, the movie has no relationship to the book except for the name of the boy (Sam Gribley)and the name of the falcon (Frightful). The location was moved to Quebec (no mention of grandpa's farm so Sam is clearly trespassing now), a pet raccoon named Gus was added (why?), Frightful is killed off (why? There are 2 more books in the trilogy), Sam is there with a microscope to do algae experiments (and the purpose of this is....?) and Sam learns his lesson (?) after being ... Read More

Watched as a child in black and white. Looked forward to the night it came on, can't recall which night, and our entire family watched it. Ordered seasons 1 & 2 and am delighted that my 7 & 8 year old grandsons love to come over to watch "Ol' Danl'". Planning to order other seasons soon. Background is clearly not Kentucky,,,rather as one writer stated in the west. Today tv might be more geographically accurate, but the history and watching the birth of our great nation helps to birth American pride in this younger generation, as was planted in us boomers. Maybe that's part of the problem. Our children aren't exposed to things that generate pride in America. We are still America!! Or is that politically incorrect!!? I say,,,as do many of us who won't stand up...LET'S TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK. DON'T LIKE IT HERE? ... Read More
