Odd satire on voyeurism (?) that has film student Virginia (Maria Rojo) wrapping up her film studies class with a video project that will require another person. She gets former boyfriend Marcelo (Jose Alonso) to come over for a drink and to talk. She plans on using him as an "experiment" in the project. She tries to seduce him but he discovers the camera, gets angry and leaves but returns later and agrees to help her. They get naked and have sex for the video project. "Homework" takes place on one set and from the angle of Virginia's camera. It's a two-person character study that turns out in the end not to be what it appears at all. The sex is lengthy and explicit and designed to turn you on (it takes place in a hammock) setting up the viewer for the twist at the end. The first part of the ... Read More

"Dona Herlinda and her Son"

A Really Good Movie

Amos Lassen

I really love it when I enjoy a movie from start to finish and "Dona Herlinda and her Son' is one of those movies. Now Strand Releasing a new digitally remastered DVD of the film and that is wonderful news because the older disk is flawed and takes some of the fun away from the film.
Here is a compassionate satire on both appearances and acceptance. The film was originally made in 1985 and looking at it now, I realized how far ahead of its time that it was.
Guadalupe del Toro is the heroine as she plays Rodolfo's mother and she invites his friend Ramon to live with them in their large home in Guadalajara and explains that her son has a large bedroom and she insists that Ramon is a member ... Read More

This is by far the worst movie I have ever suffered through. I watched it for extra credit in my Spanish class and thought "SCUBA, evil babysitter and spoiled kids, sounds interesting." Well it was anything but interesting. Don't watch it. Please, I wasted 2 hours of my life and do not want you to also.

Reminiscent of "One Flew Over.." but with a Garcia Marquez twist, this is one of the classics of Mexican cinema. The horror that grips you in this film builds gradually, with the inevitability of Hellenic tragedy. If you were moved by the Nicholson flick, or dig the films of Luis Buñuel, this could be a rewarding experience for you.

I got this film by mistake thinking it was the John Goodman film, but it came on a slow day and I decided to watch it.There are gay and pedofile themes to this film and though it has some very funny scenes I would not call it a comedy. The acting is very good and I found myself going over the story in my head days after watching it.It is a good film but do not plunk it in the dvd player thinking it will entertain the kids while you do your own thing.

I enjoyed Ernesto's performance in this movie; but that's about it. The rest of the cast either overacted their roles or the story was so jumbled up I couldn't understand it at all. I don't think subtitles could've helped me understand this at all.
