VHS : Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne
What a great movie, and why it's not on DVD is beyond me. Maggie Smith plays the spinster Judith Hearne, a lonely Dublin woman who's spent her life caring for her sick aunt, seeking refuge in the teachings of the Catholic Church, and when that fails, the bottle. She meets an American Babbitt type (played by Bob Hoskins) who shows her some attention, especially after he learns she's got money. She immediately fancies he's in love with her and she throws herself at him, only to be rebuked. This pushes her off the deep end: she renounces her faith, hits the bottle hard, and ends up in an institution.

Years go by after which Hoskins shows up again and asks Smith to marry him; she realizes it's just for her money now and sends him packing. Her lonely life will remain just that.

This is a great movie from start to end. I watched this movie last night, and I have to say that it's a great film. When I watched it last night, I must say that it was a great ghost story right up to the very end of the film. The acting in this movie was awesome especially with the children acting so strangely. When you see them acting strangely, you can tell right away that something is not right about them, but I don't want to tell you anymore, because that would be a giveaway. Would you want to be in a house with something like that happening? I would, because I am not afraid, even if the house has a haunted past like this with the two creepy children. This film is a great film to watch for Halloween, and comes highly recommended.

Perhaps some classics cannot be made into movies. THE GREAT GATSBY, which makes anybody's list of the great American novels, may just be one. Having just seen this film again for the first time since its release, I think I need to reread the novel. The chief flaw of the movie is the casting of Mia Farrow as Daisy Buchanan. While she certainly can act and become hysterical at the smell of a room full of roses, it is difficult to understand the power that she holds on Gatsby. While Redford makes an adequate if not outstanding Gatsby, Sam Waterston, a very fine actor indeed, is perfectly cast as Gatsby's neighbor. Bruce Dern works as the boorish Tom Buchanan, Karen Black isn't bad as his woman on the side, and Scott Wilson as her cuckolded husband who seeks revenge is well cast.

...you may get what you want. Almost reminded me of the Twilight Zone in places - cinematically and storywise. It's not science fiction of course, but the irony in this unsettling story has elements of that most awesome of TV shows. To have what you love or what you think you should have? That is the question!

This is an intimate, detailed look at a woman who feels depressed and alienated in her own marriage in the early 60's. It's part of a genre of films released in the UK at that time that challenged the conservative establishment coming out of the 1950's. ("Look Back in Anger", "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning").

In this case, it's the woman's turn, played magnificently by Anne Bancroft. She plays the unfulfilled woman understatedly, but with the subtle nuances that made her a great actress.

For example, she gets a faraway, lost look that captures all that she feels she is missing, while talking to her psychiatrist, which he does not see. When she snaps back, she is angry, completely inexplicable to the inept male pyschiatrist that can't understand her sorrow.

Anne Bancroft won the Best Actress ... Read More
