VHS : Stalin (1992)
A true characterization of a truly pathetic individual. Historically, Stalin & Hitler were no more than two lost souls, losers in every way, that found a home in subjective, reactive rhetorical organizations.

Stalin used his power to turn his delusions into reality, and untold
horrors for the Russian people. This movie accurately portrays the
beast and his place in history.

This movie is available on DVD in Region 4 (Australia, New Zealand) and I picked it up from an online retailer to play in my region-free player. What a fortuitous choice.
It was funny to watch a young Jay Leno and Louis Jourdan was a good choice to play a down on his luck Italian count, but what really made this movie for me was Michael Caine playing it both ruthless and charming.
The movies plot follows Caine's idea of having the American Mafia buy a bank in Switzerland with which to launder money. All seems to be going as planned until he arrives in Geneva and things start to unravel.
Thinking on his feet Caine and his chums decide to make the best of their situation and in the process of turning things around become entangled in a silver smuggling operation, an unscrupulous banker (played ... Read More

On viewing this film again I wish to add that I did a disservice to Anglam's portrayal of Byron. It is too subtle a performance for the merits of it to strike one immediately. On a second viewing one is left with the correct impression of Byron as a man plagued with doubts, who is aloof yet has moments of great generosity of spirit, and who in turn is equally capable of cruelty or kindness dependent on his mood.
A fine film, historically accurate and wonderfully portrayed by all concerned. A genuine unsung classic.

This movie is an understated gem of a film!! Start to finish, there is always something to make you grin. The performances are very good from all the players, and the dialogue is rich & very witty. Even the plot is quite unique, especially given the era the movie was made in. The central romances of the film--Harry/Meli and Boris/Barbara--are sweet & touching. There is good chemistry shared by all. This film is worth watching!!!

A great and brilliantly subtle film. This is a turbulent and complex essay on local vs elite culture, on urban vs rural life styles, on utopian ideals vs difficult realities. It was made in the sixties as the satellite countries began to push for atonomy from a bureaucratic and repressive soviet system.

But it speaks to everyone in its portrayal of the role of art and beauty in the lives of common people.
