VHS : The Miracle (1959)
It is truly a shame that this film is not available on DVD in this age of technology! Furthermore...[.....]..ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! I already have a copy on VHS and I bought it brand new...and no...it did not cost anywhere near [.....]. That is a total rip off. The movie is entertaining, but it's not that good and most people have never heard of it. Why the scandalous greed when it comes to selling a copy of a VHS? I am just going to have my copy transferred to DVD and I will sell them for [.....] bucks a whop. I'm an incurable romantic and a Catholic and that is why this movie appealed to me. Believe me...it's no great drama, but if you are a romantic like myself, you will enjoy it very much.

"A full, ripe ear of emotion and enjoyment"

-New York Herald Tribune

Bette Davis gives a sharp, vital interpretation of Miss Moffat(the spinster teacher fighting to educate the poor children of a Welsh mining village)...by remaining true to its legitimate stage counterpart," adds the Hearld Tribune.

The story, based on Emlyn Williams' autobiographical play, focuses on the relationship between Miss Moffat and her gifted young prodigy from the mines, Morgan Evans (John Dall). "Consumed by inward fire, by the sheer joy of imparting knowledge" (London Picture Post), she molds him into a legitimate candidate for an Oxford scholarship in the remarkably short span of two years. Despite the disaster of Morgan's seduction by trouble-making Bessie (Joan Lorring), ... Read More

I'm a big fan of "old" movies, I love this particular movie genre but I was never a fan of Bette Davis, that is, until I watched this film. I've since become an avid fan and collector and I've come to believe she was the finest actress of all time. Isn't that what's so great about movies; that they often make profound impacts on our lives! Well this movie made an impact on mine and I hope it does the same for yours. And if you're looking for the next Davis film - try Watch on the Rhine. Even hubby liked that one!

VHS : Deception
Bette Davis is most well known for dominating the leading men with whom she was paired to act. For instance, her impeccable acting clearly over shadowed Bogart's performances. What makes "Deception" different from every other Bette Davis movie is being paired as the mistress of Claude Rains. If ever there was a grossly under-appreciated actor it is Claude Rains. While "Deception" is not his show, because all eyes are upon Davis (and her turquois eyes, as usual), when Rains goes after Davis' character in "Deception" it is the only time in Davis' acting history when a male supporting actor takes control of the lead. "Deception" is as intense a drama as it gets because of the dueling and riveting performances of Davis and Rains. While the plot is 'about' Henreid's character, his performance is in the background ... Read More

VHS : Rhapsody in Blue
As a Hollywood biopic this is only average. Too much of the film is devoted to Gershwin's supposed romantic involvement with two women, who are both entirely fictional. Far more important in reality was his friendship with Oscar Levant, who was not only the composer's best friend but also after his death was widely recognized as the most authoritative interpreter of his major works for piano, Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F. Levant's presence in the film lends it some historical authenticity. Also present are Al Jolson, a legendary figure in the history of American popular entertainment and the interpreter of Gershwin's single most popular song, "Swanee", and Paul Whiteman, the bandleader who collaborated with Gershwin in the premiere of Rhapsody in Blue. (Fred Astaire is sorely missed.) There is also a superb--I do not use the ... Read More

In my opinion one of the better movies of the period (1957). For anyone who remembers that period and in particular, the Catskill mountains of NY state during that period, this movie is a must have.

Gene Kelly was a fantastic dancer and actor and his leading lady, Natalie Wood played a very convincing part. Nostalgia at it's best.

My purchase was delivered on time as promised, in fact it arrived a couple of days early. I am very pleased with the service I received....as usual

VHS : Adventures of Mark Twain (1944)
I especially enjoyed the early scenes which were wonderful and seeing Twain on the riverboat was thrilling. For a forties Hollywood bio, this film does remarkably well. There are factual errors here and there but on the whole, it was a pleasant surprise to see that they got much of it right. I've read that his daughter Clara was a consultant on this movie. Of course it also contained a typically overly sentimental death scene which all films of that era included. I've only been able to see this movie on TCM. Unfortunately, it is unavailable on VHS or DVD.
I don't understand why they have recently issued the Max Steiner score on CD but the DVD is still not available!

VHS : Another Man's Poison
While Bette Davis was married to her fourth husband, actor Gary Merrill, they were is several movies together. This is the rarest of them because both are the leading actors and the setting is actually their own home.

Merrill doesn't play Davis' on-screen husband. Instead, he's a crook who scares her out of her wits after he breaks into her home and virtually holds her hostage for something her on-screen husband had done.

This movie was made during Davis' "All About Eve," era, when she had already become a silver screen legend whose films are immortalized. Davis looks very much like her "Margo Channing" character in "...Eve" and delivers what I feel is an extra realistic performance in her own habitat with her real-life husband. To have a full-feature glimpse inside of Davis' and Merrill's home is wonderfully revealing ... Read More
