VHS : Poor Little Rich Girl
If you feel silly watching Shirley Temple films without a child, watch this one. Jack Haley and the wonderful and sexy Alice Faye are superb. There's a dark aspect with one character stalking Shirley (rather unsettling). Everyone is terrific in the film and I believe it to be Shirley Temple's best movie. I agree with one reviewer about the cruel dispatching of the nurse Collins. It was either the result of clumsy writing or editing. Otherwise this is one enjoyable, bouncy film.

I ordered this supposedly rare color set thinking 23 dollars was a good price for fond memories....what I got was a 1960s-70 VHS quality colorized copies...yes the tapes are still faded and the color unnatural in spots...Hollywood can do anything digially these days but whomever is distributing and making money on this evidently does not care. Amazon please include a note specifing what one is getting on your site ..a disclaimer at least..you are too good a company for this kind of business selling tapes one can record over the airwaves!!!!Also they are coming out with DVDS in May I hope they are better...

Jesse James was both outlaw and idol. He reacted in a way many would have liked to when wronged. Many have played the role of Jesse James, this classic remains one of the best. It is a must for any historical/western collector. With Tyrone Power, Henry Fonda and Randolph Scott playing the key characters you are in for a real treat in a movie you will watch over and over.

I bought this video new. The story line is excellent. The acting is excellent. The scene in the courtroom is clever and excellent. The depiction of American history is excellent. The costumes are stylized and overwrought, as was typical during the earlier days of Hollywood. The film is an excellent teaching device for kids. This film was one of the eternal favorites of our parents' generation and our grandparents' generation. But there is a slight problem. There are irritating crackling noises throughout. Why is this? The crackling noises make the movie almost unbearable. I was only able to watch this otherwise excellent movie only once. I own about 50 videotapes, many of them bought second hand. Crackling noises of the same type occur on only one of these, namely, Three Stooges in Orbit, which I bought ... Read More

VHS : Little Miss Broadway
Betsy (Shirley Temple) is a little orphan girl who knows that the world should just all "smile, smile! Smile and be happy!" Her cheery attitude gets her adopted into a theatrical family who resides at a hotel, but the landlady wants her money, and the troupe has none. Fortunately for Betsy, the landlady's nephew (George Murphy) is sympathetic to their cause and wants to help.

Little Miss Broadway is pleasant but standard. The story is absolutely unimportant; the stars are really the highlight.

One of the most exciting things about this movie is the brilliant supporting cast, a bunch of character actors with plenty of personality. The most famous one is Jimmy Durante whose trademark nose and gravelly voice are just foundation for smiles. Donald Meek and Edna Mae Oliver play well off of each other ... Read More

Even the most talented child stars have to grow up one day. In JUST AROUND THE CORNER, you can sense the "beginning of the end" of Temple's child star career. This was Temple's final movie of 1938; the following year she'd struggle to maintain her popularity at the box office as she tried to make the difficult transition from child star to juvenile performer.

In JUST AROUND THE CORNER, Temple plays out a variation of the same story she had done so many times before. When her father (Charles Farrell) loses all his money, little Penny Hale (Temple) is pulled out of her exclusive boarding school and reunites with him in their ritzy Manhattan apartment building - where they have been forced to move from the penthouse to the basement. Instead of complaining, Penny takes positive charge of the situation and befriends ... Read More

20th Century Fox had an impressive track record with musicals during the 1930s and 1940s, turning out one box office smash after another--but for all their great popularity at the time they were not usually liked by the critics and most film historians tend to be dismissive of them even to this day. There is a reason for that: although they were well designed and well crafted, they were seldom innovative and they existed as star vehicles plain and simple, flyweight creations shot through with lots of American boosterism and jingoism and designed to show off a female star. And in the 1940s that star was Betty Grable.

Grable (1916-1973) knocked around Hollywood for a decade without gaining much attention--but after a stint on Broadway led to the popular 1940 movie DOWN ARGENTINE WAY she was suddenly 20th Century Fox's ... Read More

There's a lot to enjoy in this goofy, perfunctory Fox backstager. The casting (fun, quirky) is the star here, trying perhaps to recapture the mood of a 1930's screwball comedy.

No one -- particularly the writers and the director -- will ever be accused of laboring too much on this one. The actors know that there isn't much drama and there isn't much comedy, but they deliver what they can.

A couple of small delights: 1. Some of the makeup and hair on this VHS is outrageously unflattering in the technicolor -- and that's part of the 1940's charm; 2. The camera work is particularly undistinguished. They weren't going to go into overtime making this one! 3. The young Jackie Gleason is aboard as a frustrated theatrical manager.

I'm so happy I stumbled upon this movie.
