VHS : Hitch-Hiker (1953)
This movie is proof positive that you do not need a lavish budget ,colour ,star names and a lengthy running time in order to make a quality movie.Without the "benefit" of any of the above the picture is an utter gem .

Its simple but compelling storyline sees 2 friends played by Edmond O'Brien and Frank Lovejoy on a fishing trip and they stop to pick up a hitcher ,a gaunt and slightly creepy looking man who just happens to be a killer .His victims are those unwise and unwary enough to give him a lift .He forces them at gunpoint to drive him over the border to Mexico where he proposes to make his escape from justice .He must continuue to exercise power over the 2 men while escaping the police manhunt .

VHS : Not Wanted (1949)
Sally Forrest stars as Sally, a nineteen year old girl who gets involved with pianist Leo Penn, falls hard for him, even following him to another town to be with him. He's not interested, so she takes up with a boyish war veteran, played earnestly by Keefe Brasselle. When she discovers she is pregnant by Penn, her life is turned upside down again. The storyline is presented straightforwardly, something that surprised me given that the film was made in 1949. Actress Ida Lupino directed most of the film, although she is not credited, and in some ways, it matches the tough character she so often played on screen. The film presents the girl's plight with heart, but doesn't really get sentimental. It's starkly photographed, with elements of silent film incorporated, as long passages of time ... Read More

for those who "survived" parochial school, a light hearted comedy about a catholic girls' boarding school. despite the anthology of frustrated nun jokes, as teachers they pushed you to be the best you could be.

this movie tells several examples with which i can relate, of nuns who go beyond what is required to what is needed for the student's advancement. be it swimming, academics or the band, the resident students and nuns create a community filled with a few laughs and several lessons.

The vistas of New Mexico are just awesome in this movie--seeing NM in rather unspoiled times was enough to keep me entranced! The story line and acting is a little hokey however, but it is just 'so sixties' that I couldn't resist purchasing it. Gen Xers will probably just hate it, though!
