VHS : A Christmas Carol
Patrick Stewart is the PERFECT Scrooge. I own this version and watch it every single year. It never gets old. It's one of the best "A Christmas Carol"'s I have seen. It always puts me in the Christmas spirit. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves Christmas movies. It's a perfect movie to watch over Thanksgiving weekend to get yourself in the spirit.

VHS : Lord Peter Wimsey: Clouds of Witness
Dorothy L. Sayers writes many non-fiction books however among her best is the Lord Peter Wimsey series. I came to this series sort of though the back door. My first taste was the BBC productions with Petherbridge as Lord Peter that can now be found on DVD ASIN: B000062XDX. So I read all of Dorothy's books containing the relationship of Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane. Now it is time to go through the whole series.
Now I watch the one I missed in PBS. The first thing I notices was that Ian Carmichael talks much faster than Petherbridge. And all the people seem older. Of course Peter was supposed to be older when he met Harriet.

Lord Peter returns from Corsica. To find his older brother the Duke of Denver (David Langton) practically accused of murder. What is worse is his ... Read More

VHS : Mr Rogers Neighborhood: Circus Fun
Mr. Rogers is at the circus! In the episode, he and Betty Aberlin go to the circus. Fred's friend Jeff plays Chuckles the Clown. In my opinion, Chuckles was a bit big and scary. I reccomend this video instead of Kids Love The Circus which skipped.

VHS : 84 Charing Cross Road
This is a deeply touching movie about a long-term frienship between booklovers stunningly enacted by the gifted Anne Bancroft and the amazingly young and handsome Anthony Hopkins. Anne Bancroft can really make an audience appreciate the writer's craft and how beautiful and spiritual poetic words are to her or him.

There is not one sex scene; not one scene involving nudity. There are no scenes of violence, intentional or arbitrary. It's a booklover's Platonic dream and romance.

That two people can grippingly hold an audience's attention while (only) discussing books makes this movie endearing and special and rare.

VHS : Mr Rogers Neighborhood: Kindness
We really liked this one! It reinforced the conversations we were having at the time about friendships and kindness. I am glad I bought it. I can only ever give Mr. Rogers four stars, as much as I value this series, because the Land of Make Believe is so strange. I think the story lines are more complicated than a young child can get and the characters can be hard to understand. My daughter does seem to struggle with this part, but she loves Daniel the tiger and Loretta the cat. We both find the other puppets creepy.

Like the other reviewer, I finished this two-DVD mini-series in one sitting. I was also clueless what I was getting, but my passion lasted 'til the very end.

It was VERY difficult for me to understand the heavy provincial British accent at the beginning, and there was no close-captioning in this production (something DVD production company should have thought about). However, I was very determined to watch it and I succeeded. Fortunately I was able to understand 90% of the story toward the end (and I'm a veteran of BBC period dramas).

Do not let the language issue deter you though, because the story is very rewarding and very timeless, not only for the production value like the other reviewer pointed out, but the story itself transcends the time period it is set (which ... Read More

My wife and I just saw this on TV, and the story and good acting pulled us in, and kept us there all the way. Without revealing anything, I'd just say that we both thought the ending really sucked, and ruined it. Either the author or the director made a bad decision about the ending, I'd say. Glad we saw it on TV.

VHS : Trial (1963)
Kafka is my favorite modern writer. Anyone who wants to understand Kafka should read Ruth Tiefenbaum's Moment of Torment, which quite convincingly makes the case that Kafka was a passive homosexual, who used his famous code to tell the truth about himself in a way that wouldn't destroy his position in society.

The literary world has always recognized the eery power of Kafka's oeuvre, but has always been puzzled about exactly what it means, if anything. So we get rather absurd interpretations such as that the Trial is a novel about bureaucracy, etc.

There is a great deal of academic posing - Kafka exegesis, one might say, or explaining the incomprehensible, but certifiably great Kafka to the masses (or to students rather).

The novel The Trial concerns a young man ... Read More
