VHS : Black Swan
I remember as a child watching all the great old pirate movies with my Dad on Friday nights. Tyrone Power was always one of our favorites and The Black Swan is one movie that stood out in memory for me. It is a beautifully filmed and vastly entertaining film and one I just had to add to my "good ole days" section of my DVD library. If you love pirates-don't pass up on this treasure.

VHS : Gunfighter
I'm really surprised this isn't on DVD and more accessible to the public. Gregory Peck is first rate in his role as Ringo, the aging gun-fighter who's taking a hard look at life and wanting to change his ways. And Millard Mitchell was impressive in his supporting role. I loved the foreshadowing all through the picture and I was left stunned by the ending. Wasn't expecting that from a 1950's movie. I'm not a great fan of the western genre (although I'm learning to appreciate it) but this movie is beyond genre; it's a good, solid story with a great leading man.

VHS : Song of Bernadette
While America was involved in out Civil War, a young woman named Bernadette in France was having a war of her own. She was abused and not believed when she worshiped God in her own way through a 'lady' who appeared only to her and a miracle grotto with healing waters in an unusual place. It was strange that no one else could see the apparition of Mary or hear her requests of Bernadette. I remember the first time I saw this movie as a college freshman in a small town movie theater. Her trials and tribulations were perfectly acted by newcomer Jennifer Jones, who went on to win the Academy Award for her performance.

A song, The Village of St. Bernadette , was recorded by Andy Williams. Pat Boone recorded "Bernadene, Why Can't You be True" about the same time. These were two distinctly opposites, ... Read More

VHS : Captain From Castile
I am so happy to be able to watch parts of the movie and listen to the music at any time. I have watched this movie dozens of times since it first appeared on TV. Cesar Romero and Tyrone Power, even Jay Silverheels have never been better. Jean Peters is beautiful. The music is powerful. Everything about the movie is terrific. It was thought provoking to me as a kid by depicting the Inquisition in Spain and into the New World. Among other things, it is a history lesson, skewed toward the Spanish of course.

A little off the beaten track but a great introduction to that British Institution Lloyds of London and the birth of the Insurance Industry. Yeah I know it sounds boring but give it a chance! Tryone Powers is in it!

VHS : Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing
I remember watching this film with my mom on a weekday afternoon as a kid and wondering why she was crying at the end. It seemed boring as a kid watching it. But as my taste for movies advanced, so did the understading of this film. I took a chance on this film again and was pretty touched by it. It's a carefully patterned film with one of my favorite actors. William Holden is a true romantic leading man. He would get another shot on a similar project, "The World of Susie Wong." The casting of Jennifer Jones was satisfactory as she plays her part very well, although it loses it's luster as she is not asian. But it's the backdrop of Hong Kong and the beautifully photographed landscape that impressed me the most, epecially the unforgetable musical score that surrounds the couple. Though the film does seem tame compared to ... Read More
