VHS : Rose of Washington Square
Fanny Brice sued (and won big money) over the clear references to her own life, and Alice Faye is not the person to do justice to the song "My Man" (see Barbra Streisand in "Funny Girl" if you want real emotion) but this is still an engrossing film with Al Jolson performing some of his signature somgs.

Faye adds little to the role of a Ziegfeld star who marries poorly, but her likeability is all that is needed. Tyrone Power is all charm and attempts to add some substance to his role as a neer-do-well gambler. There's also Bill Frawley of I Love Lucy fame in a small role, but for me the film is an unequalled chance to see Al Jolson at his very best. Jolson avoids the over-acting of his earlier starring films (near the end of his film career, he accepted third billing here) but then ... Read More

2.Intermezzo: A Love Story starring: Ingrid Bergman, Leslie Howard, Edna Best, John Halliday, Cecil Kellaway

VHS : Intermezzo: A Love Story
This movie is a remake of a Swedish film which introduced Ingrid Bergman to American audiences. Selznick Studios liked her so much, they brought her to Hollywood to make Intermezzo in English. The story is about a middle aged musician (Leslie Howard) who falls in love with his daughter's piano teacher (Bergman). He leaves his wife to be with her and the two share happy but fleeting moments together in France. There are times when the story becomes overly dramatic, but what it lacks in believability it makes up for in visual opulence.

Not only does Intermezzo benefit from a beautiful cast and beautiful music, director Gregory Ratoff does an excellent job of making each frame look artistic. Both of the stars are give many gorgeous close-ups and their beauty helps the love story seem believable. ... Read More

VHS : Corsican Brothers
Douglas Fairbanks Jr. stars in this film in which he plays the roles of twin brothers. Separated at birth and raised by different families, one brother becomes a Parisian gentleman; the other a Corsican bandit.
But the brothers meet again years later, in time to rescue their country from the tyranny of Colonna, played here by character actor Akim Tamiroff as a smirking villain.
Fairbanks is splendid as the righter of wrongs in this old-fashioned film of swordplay and adventure.

VHS : The Heat's On
One of Mae's lesser seen movies,The Heat's On, made in 1943, was perhaps her hope for a come back in a new era of film making that had changed drastically from her heyday in the 30's. Mae is lovely and sparkles each time on screen. Alas, Mae is only on screen in this picture a mere 24 minutes of the total 83 minute running time. I believe that if Mae had been willing to change her patented Diamond Lil image and had the right people behind her for the transition, she could have had a great second career in the 40's even with the censorship police. She was still a beautiful, talented, unique and one of a kind actress. While not her best movie, The Heat's On is still entertaining, albeit the intrusive musical numbers detract from the story line. If filmed as a Mae West vehicle that made her the centerpiece this would have been ... Read More

This movie was not redone in technicolor. The Black and white takes some time to get used to.

VHS : Black Magic (1949)
Though not directed by Welles, Black Magic is worthy of standing alongside his other tour de force creations. This swashbuckling tale of intrigue is given the extra charge of Welles charismatic energy and style. Welles masterfully plays a villainous character that we shamelessly root for.

VHS : Adam Had Four Sons
I bought this movie and watched it only because I am a fanatic of Ingrid Bergman and a collector of her movies. It was not an extraordinary film. But there was some real good acting especially from Susan Hayward. The story was enjoyable but the ending was a bit poor as everything happened too fast and there was no drama. Anyway, there was Ingrid Bergman and I enjoyed every single moment of her appearance, especially the scene where her nice character got mad with Hayward's character and attempted to throw her out of the house.
