VHS : Sarah Plain And Tall
First off, let me clarify in my personal response that I've never been a fan of the historical fiction genre. Historical fiction books bore me, and they never seem to contain the excitement found in contemporary fiction. Sarah, Plain and Tall, while more character-centric than most historical fiction books, still just didn't catch my interest. I was just glad that unlike many historical fiction books, this one actually didn't shove random historical facts down the readers' throats in massive clumps--the historical details were there, but very subtle. Still, the plot was too plain, with not enough branches and wacky plot twists. Everything was hopelessly predictable, and I know children's authors can do much better than that. That being said, I'd still like to read the sequels (never can ... Read More

Excellent film, thoughtful yet entertaining. Not without flaws, surely, and in light of recent events the setting may obscure the story. And it's a good story, one I sorely wish was available in a widescreen DVD edition.

The story is, in fact, about flaws. Flaws at both ends of the spectrum. Youth explores its newly opened world, trying all of its offerings with abandon, testing its boundries, but at what cost? Age conserves its resources, adheres to the safer paths, braised in its own hindsight and supposed wisdom, but at what cost?

MASS APPEAL is not about those in or seeking power. The characters, like you and me, won't move mountains or shake the foundations of the world. But they wrestle with what's right and what's practical in deciding how they will affect the community ... Read More

If you are looking for a wholesome film that is well acted with a storyline that is original and captivating, this is the film for you and your family. Set in historic America, it admirably portrays the upright pioneering values of God-fearing, hard-working American immigrants. The complex three dimensionality of the characters creates a chemistry rarely seen in good story-telling movies. Don't miss this one, the kids and you will love it.

This video obviously looks like a pirated version. Over an hour of the original video tape has been left out. I wouldn't waste my money.

To those from the King of Prussia Area (like myself), there are references and allusions to places (VF park, etc.) and some interesting exaggerated portrayal of characters, some of which I had for teachers (Pat Schnure, Vince Valaitis)

To those not from the area, it is still a sickening psychological drama that will keep you locked to the TV for the full 4+ hours (ended up watching it till 3 in the morning). The outcome is known, but the choppiness of the plot keeps the viewer actively watching, trying to figure out what has happend, and what is about to happen. The end of the movie with the cases ties everything together to leave the viewer highly satisfied. For those who like intellectually stimulating movies, a must-see. For those who are more interested in comedy, thrills, or screams, you'll ... Read More

I am fond of this video and grateful for its existence. Say what you will about the production; for most of us, it provides a rare chance to see the home in which Flannery O'Connor spent her adult years and in which she wrote most of her stories(the film was shot 'on location' at the farm). After O'Connor's death, the family kept the farm private, and her fans had to catch what glimpses they could. Now, of course, Andalusia is open to the public on Tuesdays and Saturdays, but for those who live far from Milledgeville, "The Displaced Person" provides a chance to see what the author's life was like - and - it's a whopping good story.

VHS : Streetcar Named Desire (1995)
This lavish 1995 television remake of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE is simply sublime. Jessica Lange is perfect casting for the tour-de-force role of Blanche DuBois, and Tennessee Williams' play still packs a hell of a punch.

Blanche DuBois (Jessica Lange) goes to visit her sister Stella (Diane Lane) and her husband, boorish Stanley Kowalski (Alec Baldwin) one sultry summer in New Orleans. Blanche lives in a world of her own creation to protect herself from the frightening, black gaping void of a hostile real world from which she simply cannot survive. When Stanley discovers Blanche's weaknesses it's only a matter of time before she cracks completely.

Tennessee Williams' dramatic tale of the innocent and fragile being crushed by a hostile and cruel world is still amazingly relevant. John Goodman ... Read More

Shadow Watcher
Nobody Drowns in Mineral Lake

Larry Gelbart wrote the hilarious screenplay adaptation of Bryan Burrough and John Helyar's book, BARBARIANS AT THE GATE, the essentially true story of F. Ross Johnson, CEO of R.J.R. Nabisco, and his 1980's attempt to buy out the shareholders of that company.

James Garner stars as the wheeling-dealing Johnson, while Jonathan Pryce is cast as Henry Kravis, master of the leveraged buyout, who is also determined to get the Nabisco stock.

Glenn Jordan directed this suspense-filled contest for "king of the hill," and keeps us guessing as to who will win right up until the film's conclusion. Also in the cast are Peter Riegert and Joanna Cassidy.

One of the funniest scenes in the movie, incidentally, occurs when Garner discovers ... Read More
