VHS : I Never Sang for My Father
I watched "I Never Sang for my Father" for the first time today and it surprized me that I hadn't seen it before. This is an excellent movie that deals with a real issue in many families. The issue is adult father/son relationships and how individuals involved handle their changing roles. The roles don't need to transpose themselves although this sometimes happens as parents reach advanced age. What ideally needs to happen is that love and respect would mature along with father and son. In this way authority would evolve into encouragement and instructions evolve into advice while obedience evolves into support and responsibility becomes second nature. This is NOT the relationship we find in "I Never Sang for my Father". The father (Melvin Douglas) is a domineering man whose life is ... Read More

VHS : Hobson's Choice
I just finished watching this movie. Although it is not the most well-done movie (it IS from the 80s after all), I was hooked almost immediately. The action starts right at the beginning of the film with Maggie's outlandish idea. It is a study in characters to see the growth of Maggie from the dominant one to quietly supportive housewife and Will from the timid one to taking his lead as husband. The affection that grows between them is charming.

VHS : Summer Wishes Winter Dreams
Rita, the "snow queen" is another of Joanne Woodward's aging spinster virgin frumps, that she seemed to specialise in the early 1970's. Depressed and discontent, her mental state is symbolised by the nightmare plane crash that director Gilbert Cates opens the film with. Writer Stewart Stern - who also wrote Rachel, Rachel - loads on the psycho-baggage. She has a demanding mother (Sylvia Sydney), a fat daughter (Doris Brenner), a gay son, and has married a man she did not love (Martin Balsam). All this would be unbearable with anyone but Woodward playing the role since she lightens it with her natural intelligence and sly sense of humour. It's amusing to see Balsam and Woodward argue in their middle-class educated way, though Rita's wearing a mink clues you that she isn't about to scream ... Read More

VHS : Oh God Book 2
Let's face it, sequels usually never surpass the original. Sure Terminator 2 and Godfather 2 are exceptions, but in the movie world, it's a simple fact sequels suck! But just because it's not usually as good as the original, does not mean that Oh God Book II is a bad movie. I actually think it deserves more credit. George Burns reprises his role as God and that within itself is a good thing because portraying our Lord is no easy feat and he saves the movie from every aspect. It's basically the same premise as OH God, only this time it's a little girl told to spread the Word. The cast is a bunch of nobodies and mind you some of the acting is pretty bad, but the little girl Tracy Richards played by (Louanne - don't ask why she has no last name, nobody really knows) but Louanne does an acceptable ... VHS : The Last Married Couple in America
Ok, so this is no "Four Seasons," "Bob and Carol," or even "10," but what it is is a 1980 well-to-do California slice-of-life sex farce starring the very funny George Segal and the equally engaging Natalie Wood.

If you were around in those days, you remember the all-wood kitchens (they even had a wood-paneled refrigerator!), the ferns, the silver lampshades, roller blades, disco parties, and groovy tennis outfits. You also had the rather intelligent approach to the lives of married couples, including the psychoanalysis, the "getting in touch with one's feelings," and all the baggage that went along with it.

In the end, like "Bob and Carol" or "10," the protagonists decide that square dull married life is better after all, and they are the better for it. Along the way, however, get ready ... Read More
