VHS : Separate But Equal
SEPARATE BUT EQUAL (1991-PG) is one of my favorite movies. Nominated for seven Emmy Awards. It is about the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court Case. Starring Sidney Poitier as Thurgood Marshall, the lead attorney for the NAACP, Burt Lancaster, as John W. Davis, arguing the other side, and Richard Kiley, as Chief Justice Earl Warren, it is a powerful story about one of the most important Supreme Court Decisions in the history of our country. The first half is set in South Carolina and depicts the human side of that tragic law called 'separate but equal'. They were separate but anything BUT equal. The second half is the legal battle. My only comment would be that this should be REQUIRED WATCHING to understand the background of the civil rights' movement and the racial situation in ... Read More

Made in 1943 by the great George Stevens, it is highly entertaining with Jean Arthur at her best. Charles Coburn won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the crafty old guy who put the young couple into position to fall in love.

What is it all these people are praising? I saw nothing of the quality which they seem to see. Rock Hudson was ridiculous! James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor are too young to play their roles, no matter how much silver the make-up people spray into their hair. It was so long and boring. The blocking was clumsy and stilted. What else can I say? I could only get through one hour of this disaster. Academy Awards? Give me a break.

Haven't seen this movie for 30 years, and yes it's old, but still good fun. The story of a wanabe British soldier of the Raj whose sole claim to fame was that he carried water for the soldiers he so admired. Constantly reminded that he is not a soldier Gunga Din serves with enthusiasm, even when under fire and finally proves that he was the better man.
Sure the fight scenes are dated, but it's amazing what they managed to pull off without the benefit of modern technology and expertise built on the expertise of filmakers such as this.

If ever a film deserved to be released on DVD, this delightful treasure should be DVD'd at once! It amazes me it is not yet released! Maybe the reasons are copyright issues or some such film business. Fred minus Ginger are more than made up for with George Burns and Gracie Allen who are hilarious. They also demonstrate their versatility in two dance numbers with Astaire and hold their own admirably keeping up with him! The "Stiff Upper Lip" number with the Fun House mirrors is among the most ingenious things I've seen in a musical and is alone worth viewing the movie. I own a barely viewable copy taped off Public TV in the nineties. One piece of trivia mentioned was that Joan Fontaine was paired with Astaire because he and Ginger's latest movie had 'fallen off a bit' at the box office. Fontaine' role ... Read More

VHS : A Place in the Sun
Charlie Chaplin called George Steven's 1951 A Place In the Sun the greatest American movie he had ever seen. The passing of fifty seven years has dulled this comment somewhat but it is still an amazing film experience. The film based loosely on Theodore Dreiser's American Tragedy transports Dreiser's story to 1950's America and confronts the problems faced by returning veterans as they try to move up in a stratified society.

There are great performances by Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelly Winters as the principals caught in a love triangle that eventually leads to murder. The film is less an indictment against American capitalism than it is a love story and on the whole the editing that Steven's two screen writers (Michael Wilson and Harry Brown) did to the source material greatly improves the flow of the ... VHS : I Remember Mama (1948)
I finally got around to watching this movie after knowing about it for some time and coming close to watching it once. I found it thoroughly delightful with just the right amount of sentimentality, not overly mushy. Being a book lover and especially of English literature, I particularly enjoyed the references to some of my favorite books. While the film obviously centers around the mother (played wonderfully by Irene Dunn in a role like no other I've ever seen her in) I think tribute should also be made to the somewhat silent yet strong role the father played. I particularly liked the way he offered coffee to the daughter when she so obviously had "grown up" (as well as the look on his face when the mother doused with cream) and the "smoking" lesson he taught his son. But the whole movie was wonderful stuff. Definitely recommend viewing ... Read More
