VHS : Born Yesterday
Hollywood magic, they just don't make em like this anymore. Born Yesterday made an overnight star of Judy Holliday, when 3 days before the Broadway opening, Jean Arthur dropped out due to illness, and Holliday, on a diet of coffee and cigarettes, learned and opened in the role to rapturous reviews. The rest is history, Katherine Hepburn brought her out to Hollywood to appear in Adam's Rib, and she was a star. She did win the Oscar for re-creating her Born Yesterday role on film. And an Oscar winning role it sure is, every gesture, nuance and expression, are dead on. Holliday was brilliant at playing the dumb blonde when in reality she was anything but...she was actually extremely educated and I've heard rumors that she was a member of Mensa. True or not, she was an amazingly gifted performer! Sadly ... Read More

VHS : My Fair Lady (digitally THX mastered)
The only problem I have with this DVD of "My Fair Lady" is that it is in letter-box format & it's too scrunched down for me to read the lips. Good thing I know the movie by heart PLUS it has "closed captioning". Other than that, my friend & I completely enjoyed the movie. It arrived SO QUICKLY & the price was SO affordable! I'll do all my Christmas shopping at Amazon!

VHS : The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938)
Everyone knows Mark Twain's story of Tom Sawyer. Just the mention of the name conjures up images of whitewashed fences, Indians, and treasure. Tommy Kelly plays Tom in this David O. Selznik Technicolor classic. A mischievious boy at heart, he causes commotion in the town when he runs away to play pirates, and returns to find that he has been assumed dead. When he reveals himself, he does not stay out of trouble for very long. He and Huckleberry Finn (Jackie Moran) become involved in a murder trial. After that, Tom and girlfriend Becky Thatcher (Ann Gillis) find themselves lost in the caves nearby.

The child stars are surprisingly unimpressive. Their antics seem natural enough, but Kelly nor Gillis have enough charm or spunk to cement themselves in the memory. The film is also uneven; the most ... Read More

VHS : Gaslight
This is truly a GREAT suspense film with believable characters and excellent actors, director, and story. Ingrid Bergman as the helpless wife and Charles Boyer as the manipulative husband are excellent. The eerie mood that keeps building is highly effective, and Angela Lansbury's performance was memorable even though short. Well worth seeing several times, as I did. The black and white color, the foggy night scenes in the glow of the street gaslights couldn't be more befitting for this story.

VHS : The Philadelphia Story
I just watched this again and I simply must advertise my opinion on the whole of it. It's just that it was "almost" there. The classic screwball pairings of Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant are legendary, but this one was in need of a good rewrite. If you are in a sentimental mood and you have recently viewed your entire collection of 1934-1944ish screwball comedies, then you can't go too far off of the path with this offering, but...

Okay, so let's start at the beginning (not the beginning of the story, that would be just silly--let's start with the cast): Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn reunite to match wits in a slightly more "mature" (they are older, and it shows in that "Haven't we done this before, but it was more fun then, but I suppose this is nice too" kind of way) version of Bringing Up Baby. ...
