We watched this movie just this weekend, with our three teenagers, who were enthralled. Great for all ages!

VHS : Dreamchild
The centenary of Lewis Carroll's death is fast approaching, and the inspiration for Alice (Coral Browne) is coming to America for the festivities. She is a proper old woman with a sharp tongue and with very little interest in revisiting her childhood memories. It is only when an out of work reporter (David Gallagher) enters the picture that she decides to open up, and then only because she is paid for it. The memories are painful because of the strange fascination that Carroll (Ian Holm) had for her (Amelia Shankley), but upon reflection she is able to come to terms with it.

An interesting take on the story of Alice in Wonderland, much the same way that Hook was a new slant on Peter Pan, Dreamchild alternates between childlike fantasy and very mature themes. It opens with Jim ... Read More

VHS : Catherine Cookson's The Dwelling Place
Cissie Brodie is an orphaned girl whose parents die of Cholera. Refusing to allow her siblings to go to the workhouse she instead takes them to live in a cave on the Northumbrian moor. Helped by the man who loves her, Cissie's brave struggle to make a home for herself and for her siblings is the essence of what the dwelling place is all about.

I found this romance very intriguing. Cissie has two suitors, and many adventures and tragedies which threaten to shatter her happiness. The scenery is beautiful and the story is wild and unpredictable.

I recommend this for fans of historical drama. 5 abundant stars.

VHS : My Friend Walter
Family reunions are ghastly affairs. You meet relatives that you never
thought you had and indeed didn't want. Ah, but what can you do? Dear,
dear Bess comes across a relative only she can see. He's been dead for
a few centuries ( like five) and is determined to make a come back if
his little cousin will invite him into her world.

Say hello to
Walter, a charming ghost with an old score to settle with some humans
who impoverished his family and is about to do the same to young
Bess's. Walter is not some run of the mill ghost but is Sir Walter
Raliegh, himself, explorer, would be pharmacist and pain in the
butt.

Enjoy this little comedy as you see Walter mess things up for
Bess and cause havok throughout his visit. The acting ... Read More

I have this set in VHS and I really hope it comes out in DVD. I would buy it all over again. All these productions are quite true to the Catherine Cookson books. I would recommend Fifteen Streets in particular. The movie creates an incredible portrayal of the helplessness of those who are poor. My only criticism would be these need to be released as DVD's.

VHS : Retribution
While any film adaptation of a novel necessarily loses scenes and condenses characters, Complicity (or Retribution in the US) stays true to the heart of the story told by Iain Banks back in the early 90s. Jonny Lee Miller (of Trainspotting) does a fine job as Cameron Colley, a cynical leftist investigative reporter in Scotland who becomes linked with a series of deaths which have occurred across the country after he had written a scathing article which called for the violent deterrence of so-called white collar criminals such as corrupt politicians, arms dealers, and corporate raiders. Is Colley the killer or has he been framed? This film is a stylish mix of suspense, mystery, humor, and a little bit of kink, and I highly recommend it and the novel it was based on, Complicity by Iain Banks.

VHS : A Murder of Quality
Having the George Smiley movies played by Alec Giuness,
I looked forward to A Murder Of Quality.Unfortunately
eventhough I like Denholm Elliot, this was not one of
his best performances.I just couldn't believe that he
had the brains to solve anything, let alone a complicated
murder such as this.I do admit that if I hadn't seen
Alec Guiness play the part first,I might have been more
disposed to Elliot's performance.
As usual,Glenda Jackson is her brilliant self.
I never tire of seeing Joss Ackland, who is completely
believable as the snotty wanna be uppercrust Britisher.
Read the other reviews for a plot synopsis.

Being a MEGA fan of Glenda Jackson,it really ticked me
off that the picture they used of her in the biography ... Read More
