VHS : Secret Garden
I love this movie!Since I was around 5 or 6 years old, this film has been one of my favorites. The original book is a timeless classic for all ages.Out of all the film adaptations, this one is tied with the Hallmark one as my favorite. It perfectly recreates the eerie feel of the manor and the moors it is built upon. The black and white appearance of the film are made for this type of piece. Also, when the film switches to technicolor for the garden scenes, the effect is stunning. It makes for a seamless transition from the somber outside world into the pleasant magic of the garden. In addition to this, the acting is wonderful.Margaret O'Brien is the ideal choice to play Mary Lennox. She manages to make the transition from nasty child to nice child seem real and convincing. She is also very likable in ... VHS : Forbidden Planet
Forbidden Planet was always a science fiction favorite of mine due to it's outlandish setting, great acting, great sets, great characters, excellent science fiction and human element. It's pretty much everything good science fiction should be but too seldom actually achieves: intellectually stimulating, frightening, sexy, bold in story and look, fantastic, etc. This 2006 remastering is stunningly beautiful even on a standard DVD. Someone kept or found an excellent print or negative which is very fortunate.

So in this Forbidden Planet DVD we have arguably the most significant science fiction film of the surrounding decades beautifully restored to probably better than it's ever been seen in a theater. Kudos to the makers and restorers of this classic.

VHS : Hills of Home
This is a wonderful family film, but if you are expecting the emphasis to be on Lassie and her adventures, then you will likely be somewhat disappointed. Instead, the emphasis is on Dr. William MacLure (Edmund Gwenn), the elderly physician to a rural Scottish area in the 19th century. Donald Crisp plays Drumsheugh, MacClure's closest friend and a good advisor. These two actors, along with Tom Drake, who plays MacClures's assistant, were in several Lassie films during the 1940's playing different roles each time.

MacClure is one of those doctors from a bygone era that makes housecalls in the middle of the night and accepts payment in goods as well as money. At one point in the film, he is sitting at a table in a restaurant having tea as patient after patient comes up to him and practically forces payment upon ... Read More

If you didn't get it, watch it again! They all have it. Even the housekeeper has it. Oh, and get this; urban, divorced, career mom, dresses well, has three cute kids, and gets a nice man! And wait! There's more! The DOCTOR says to the kids (of single mom), "It's difficult to raise children right, and your mother had done it right." This is 1948! Also, get this, for an immediately post-war movie -- they don't finish by moving OUT of the city -- they stay in it! A family! How great is that? There is even the odd little twist that the nice man, though sexy, I guess, for his time, is SHORTER than the lovely Irene Dunne, but it's not a big deal! And what about that cute song mom and kids sing? Speaking of which, the music is great. Jane Powell sings beautifully. Later, believe it or not, there's a harmonica concerto. ... Read More

7.Courage of Lassie starring: Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Morgan, Tom Drake, Selena Royle, Harry Davenport

VHS : Courage of Lassie
This is one of the best movies of all time; it's wholesome, beautifully shot, and holds the attention, despite what some on here would say. It's about Bill (Lassie), who goes from being a stray dog growing up in the forest, to being a sheepdog owned by Taylor's character, to being a traumatized wartime hero, and finally back to being Taylor's dog again. There are many sad parts in this (particularly the cruelty toward Bill during the war scenes), and many times I wondered if Bill was going to make it out alive. Needless to say, he does, and even when the end seems near for Bill, he somehow survives, and he touches your heart throughout. I both laughed and cried for Bill. A great film for all ages to enjoy.

VHS : Lassie Come Home
This film is about a boy (McDowall) who loves his dog, Lassie. She's sold by the family so that they can afford to feed themselves rather than having to spend their wages on the dog. But Lassie keeps escaping, and eventually Taylor's character (who has a very small role in the movie) sets her free. Along the way, Lassie encounters many problems before finally reaching home. Although this is a good movie, "Courage of Lassie" is much better.
